San Diego paddles

Come on San Diego, lets get some weekly paddles organized. Maybe a time trial open for anyone, set course.

Would be cool to set up a permanent buoyed course so every one can run it when they have time ..... maybe a place to log in with times to see and compare.
Set Meeting days and times ? Maybe one in the a.m and one p.m at same ( Bahia ? ) location everytime each week ? A Shelter Island launched weekend time trial around S.D. bay would be cool too...... more stuff (boats, wakes, tides and larger spaced out 'course' buoys) to play around.

Winter racing series ?

Fall Classic ??

What are your suggestions ?

Regular group of Surfski Guys + Fast Kayak guys looking around for this too.

OC6, are you out there ???

The best thing to have is a mid-week race. So on wednesdays at 5:00 set up a race that would be about 30 minutes long. Shelter Island would be a great place to have this. With a race like this you can judge how you do by comparing yourself with the other people racing. surfskis, fast kayaks, oc1's, oc2's anything else. Great to stagger the start so slower people start first, that way everyone finishes at the same time. Everyone meeting at one time would be best, the whole point would be to be in a race situation.

@ 5 on a weekday.

Regular fast kayak group has been meeting for years @ Shelter Island at 6:30P.M to do 5-10 miles.

IMO, 30 minutes is pretty short ( unless you were refering to racing as a sprint), why not an hour at least to get some more time w / da boys.

Surfski Guys meet @ 8 A.M. on Tuesdays and I think Wednesdays at Bahia.
They do another day out of Shelter Island super early too.

I think simply setting a 10 mile Bay/ Ocean 'course' with a shorter 5 mile one contained within in it and then spreading the word about it would be cool. Let all the club guys know, let 'em practice it and then set up some show up and race dates.

Be good to get some opinions on the course, what would be your ideal 'track'?

I would be happy to receive and post some results on my website .... also know another site for virtual racing where folks from around the world can pot their 5 and ten mile times. Will check with the guy to see if it's cool to link to his site.

...... still paddling ?

30 Minutes is pretty short for people that paddle a lot or have been paddling for many years. To increase the paddling community you need to gain the people that do not paddle and for them to jump into even a short course five mile race would be very hard for them. Those people would get lost in the back and finish hoping to never paddle again. I would think the people that do paddle a lot would just incorporate the weekly 30-45 minute race into their training schedule, paddle before and after the race so they are out there longer. So what this would do is bring in new people and hopefully lead them into participating in the socal series and be a practice for the people that already do the series. Found this site which has races: http://www.deepcovekayak.com/ Enter site, go to racing at the top, then 2005 schedule/results on the left. Looks like they do something similar. Maybe Onno Paddles should put something on like this! somebody has to take charge and your name could be all over the place!

have heard of another dedicated local person who has something in the works for this winter .... I will be supporting that person as much as I am able.

So rock105 ..... what do you suggest for course ??????

My gps just died or else I would add my .02 .... usually paddle without it so do not have exact distance #s in my head. I would think something that would be visible all the time would be good. Like the looping around the outermost channel buoys in S.D. bay or a partial Mission Bay Channel to Pier run + back .... or a run out and back to the Yukon.

Good idea to 'warm up' by paddling earlier or take some new guys out before after too ... now I get what you mean.

S.D. bay course could go from shelter island boat launch area or the fishing pier then heading towards downtown, turn around at Island Prime restaurant buoy and back to the pier. Could go from that same spot, head out towards ralph's and back... In mission bay could go from the bahia to the bell buoy and back. Looking for opinions... my would be the san diego bay course heading towards downtown, i think this would be a little over six miles. Visible all the time for the paddlers and the public. Interesting no one else has said anything on this topic. Anyone else have opinions or thoughts?? would it even work to get 30 or so boats out there or is everyone set on their own schedule?

I guess guys just have their own 'course' but still it would be cool to have a 'known' course and place to check other's times.

You can post your time on this website and the guy is happy for it.

There are other times too but no Ocs I don't think.

Wonder what would happen if we set a (or a couple) huge, permanent buoy ( like those large orange ones) a mile out off the M.B. jetty. Good target + get some ocean time.

Maybe talk the course up @ the Oceanside race. Get those Olympic guys to set the times to beat.

what would happen if you put out big buoys?

best case: next time Dept of Harbor and Marine is out checking navigation marks, they would remove them.

worst case: some commercial vessel mistakes your marker for a channel marker and comes to grief, you and your clubs are liable for millions in damages and the people involved are criminally liable and perhaps end up in jail. not to mention outrigging in SD having really bad name for years

might be a good idea to check with the Harbormaster before you buoy a permanent course

Actually, it would be extremely foolish to NOT make sure you have their permission - permits are required, along with a proper anchoring system. It's not like just throwing a pillow or two out for an organized race that you pick up at the end of the event The cost can run several thousand dollars easily.

Your best bet would be to lay out a course around existing bouys and markers.

Sorry if I screwed up the thread here - it's been a while since I participated in this forum.

For bringing this back up.

Hey San Diego folks OC, Ski, Kayak, paddleboard ... please call or write to me with what you think would be a fun course for both S.D. and Mission Bay. Been attempting to collect info but I need your input ... pleeease let me know what you are thinking / picturing. I think it would be nice to have a course that folks can run once in a while that is sort of 'known' by all to be X miles once in awhile. I really think it would be fun to have everyone be in the same place at the same time a couple times this summer for some informal 'beer can racing' maybe late friday afternoons or pick a weekend day and just agree to start @ a set time. No entry fees, commitee boats or anything like that.. just " start under the Ventura Bridge, run out around bell buoy keeping all markers on your left and back in" How many times ? Talk story after. I know alot of guys go out Sat. mornings from Bahia .... if you guys ever get a chance, please write to me. NOT trying to hog into OC training times or mess up race schedules .... just trying to put something together everyone would enjoy.

Thanks

Ive been paddling an OC1 for about 3 months now and I find it so hard to find someone to go out with. I did the Bay to Bay a few weeks ago and I was the only OC1 in the race. Am I the only one In San Diego not racing on a 6 man.

Anyone interested in going out 1-2hrs 5-10 miles about 3X per week let me know

Aloha all,

I would love to get together with some people and paddle a couple of times a week. I just got into the sport, although I have done some other paddling before. I am paddling with an OC6 group right now on Sunday mornings, but I need to track down a good used OC1 for myself to paddle during the week.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Mahalo
