Training on the East Coast

Hello. I'm located in NYC so training in the water right now is not an option. I'm in good shape, work out regularly both indoors and out when it's not freezing but would like some training/supplement info to help me get and stay prepared for the upcoming season which basically starts around April - depending on how quickly the water warms up.

I've have always paddled 6-man's and started paddling 1-man's this last season and my goal is to keep doing 6-man races but would like to do some more 1-man races.

Any and all info is much appreciated!

Aloha~

Hi Manaoin,

I am on the East Coast, too, here in Maryland. I started paddling OC-1 this year as well, with the Kent Island Outrigger CC (kiocc.com). I was out on the Chesapeake through early December, and then it just got too cold! I have a Concept 2 rowing machine. It is really great, and I use it daily whether I am paddling or not. It is a great workout, though still not the same for the core muscles that paddling on the water is. I just ordered a canoe adapter that is made specifically for the Concept 2. I spoke with the guy at Vermont Waterways who makes it, he works for Concept and made it to be as close as possible to paddling a canoe or outrigger. I am hopeful that this will be the next best thing to the outrigger, at least until spring arrives. I have a 24' Seahorse by Futura, what do you paddle?

I live in Hawaii and actually do most of my training indoors. I also have a Concept 2 with a paddling adapter and that has been a great asset for training when I am unable to get in the water. I also do alot of running on a treadmill and weight lifting. Between those three activities I have been able to maintain a good level of fitness with a minimum amount of time on the water.
