Nick Agorastos, Cherisse Kelii win 19th Stan Cann Classic

Results of the first HIPA race of the 2006 season, the 19th running of the Stan Cann Classic. The day began with a Juniors race, followed by the 4 mile short course which ran up the coast from Hilo Bay and returned to Bayfront and Kamehameha Canoe Club's halau.

The 7 mile long course paddlers also went north up the coast from the Bayfront start and finished at the same location as the short course. Started 19 years ago by Stan Cann, when there were no OC-1 canoes, only surfskis (then known as kayaks), the event has tracked the rapid growth of the one and two-man canoes, as paddlers switched to craft with outriggers, and single bladed paddles.
Next week will find the Hawaii Island Paddlesports Association paddlers at Honaunau in West Hawaii, at the race sponsored by Keoua Canoe Club on Saturday, January 14.
