Starbucks Big Island Challenge

Results of today's Starbucks Big Island Challenge, held in memory of the race's founder, JJ Logan.

A 31 mile relay race from the boat ramp at Puako to Honokohau Harbor, today's event found several crews without escort vessels, necessitating shoreline changes, which made it a longer course for 5 of the teams. There were a number of solo paddlers who started the race, with two OC-1 paddlers, Dave Olds and Jacques Blais, completing the course, and four solo paddlers, who came ashore before the 31 mile finish line was crossed. There was also an OC-2 husband and wife team, Ian and Lauren Foo, who paddled the entire distance without benefit of crew changes.

The howling winds experienced earlier in the week, had abated, and left the paddlers with a long hot paddle, with only the benefit(?) of a slight headwind to cool them. Thus, the 3:32:00 record time remains, which was set two years ago by the same team that crossed the line in first place today.
