East Coast OC-1/OC-2 Season Kickoff: Kumu'ohu 15K Challenge

[Results]
What a way to start off the East Coast Outrigger Racing Association OC-1/2 season!

Gray over hanging clouds and cool showers threatened early and then the sun busted a move to melt away the long winter.

The crew from Washington Canoe Club did it right. They put on a great race and provided some good post-race beer and grinds.

Many Mahalos to Mitch, Amy Potter and the rest of the WCC paddlers, for taking such good care of us.

The Nation's Capitol is really beautiful this time of year with the cherry blossoms blooming, the amazing architecture of all the monuments and...outrigger canoes racing up and down the Potomac!

It was obvious from the start of the Women's race, until the last paddler crossed the line after the Men finished their turn at the 8.5 +/- mile up-and-backer, the ante had gone up this winter.

The perennial front runners had company and the pace was quick all the way. Caroline Brosius held off all comers and Andrey Drachenko duked it out with Hugh McFarlane for a one second win in the men's race. We were stoked to have Wendy and Rich come all the way down from Toronto Canada and compete on their beautiful Huki OC-2. We will see them up on Lake Ontario this summer for their race.

We may have the racing seasons a little mixed up, but we have fun out here on the right coast.

Aloha,

Bill Gassett

Bill, we were delighted to be able to come south for some of that lovely sunshine, an Easter re-birth on the water and a fantastic race. We were, as always, warmly welcomed by our American neighbours, and the hospitality of the Washington Canoe Club cannot be beat.
Our four area clubs look forward to hosting you all in Toronto this summer for our International Challenge. We hope you are making plans for July 08/09 - more details will be posted soon at http://www.torontooutriggerchallenge.ca
