TENTH ANNUAL HEIHEI WA'A - LONG
DISTANCE CANOE RACE

HELD SATURDAY, MAY 31, 2003 --
KEAUHOU BAY
Saturday, May 31, 2003, the 10th Annual Keauhou Heihei Wa'a was held; the
event is now named after the late Auntie Mary Jane Kahanamoku, one of the
founders of Keauhou Canoe Club. Both courses began and ended at Keauhou Bay,
where awards were given to the first three finishers in each division,
and T-shirts were presented to all of the participants. For the first time
in outrigger racing history in West Hawaii, the event consisted of all mixed
crews, with 3 men and 3 women paddling on each team. Special categories were
also added, including a Novice B division for first year paddlers, and a Kupuna
Nui division, consisting of all paddlers over 60 years of age. Mahalo for
the the kokua from the Ohana Keauhou Beach Hotel, who prepared lunch for all
the paddlers, and to Keauhou Resort sponsor of the beautiful Beth Graves design
shirts.
