Bimini Hoe Results - Bahama Islands (Bimini) to South Beach, Miami

The morning of June 3, 2006 started with a beautiful 18.5 mile ride on
the support boats SW of Bimini Bahamas with flat seas and calm winds.
The loading of the canoes from the deck boat went smoothly, and the race
started almost on time at 8:05AM. Five canoes, three men's teams and two
mixed, all with 9 paddlers, started the 50 mile course at a fast pace of
well over 7mph with periods of 9mph; however, halfway across the Gulf
Stream conditions deteriorated as they often do, with SW and West winds
approaching 15mph. Speeds dropped to 5mph for some crews creating a very
grueling race. The face and ama side winds, coupled with the Gulf Stream
moving at a very fast 4.4mph North, made for some technical steering and
difficulty in maintaing the NW course. It was at times paddling SW just
to hold the line, and not get blown/carried North to Ft. Lauderdale.
Some crews encountered localized thunderstorm activity just before
finishing and had some 30mph winds and very choppy seas. All arrived
safely and had plenty of recuperative grinds and spirits to enjoy the
luau. Mahalo to all 45 participants, support folks, safety/escort
captains and volunteers who made this race happen. See you next year and
