Aloha paddlers!

Here are some updates for the 2006 Queen Liliuokalani Canoe Races.
Importantly, 2006 is the 35th anniversary of the Men’s Long Distance Race.
Log onto www.kaiopua.org for detailed information and race registration.

CANOES
As always, we are exited to have so many crews coming this year from the
mainland and other countries. So.....heads up clubs from Kauai, Oahu Molokai
and Maui...as usual, we loan all the available canoes we can arrange for to
crews coming from outside the Hawaiian Islands. Hopefully you’ve already got
your bookings with Young Bros!

LOGO SHOP
Just off the pool area, open Wednesday through Monday. Being the 35th
Anniversary, make sure to get your commemorative gear!

REGISTRATION
Go to the www.kaiopua.org for online registration.
The registration room, just across for the LOGO SHOP and pool at the King
Kam, will be open:
Thur 3:00 – 5:00
Fri 8:00 – 6:00 don’t wait until the last minute gang!
Sun 7:00 – 8:00
Check the web site for all the details of what you will need to bring to
register your crews. If you register on line, you will still need to come in
during the above hours to pick up you race packets. But guaranteed, this
process will much more streamline if you pre-register!

PARKING
If you are planning to drive to the race site Saturday and Sunday mornings,
please allow extra time to find parking.

THE PIER
In port, Thursday AND Friday...cruise ships. So some areas of the pier will
have limited access (or no access) and tenders will be going to and from the
pier to the ship. If you are out on the water practicing, it is important to
keep your distance from the cruise ship and its tenders. If you have any
questions about this, please check with a race official about the federal
regulations.

INTERNATIONAL PADDERS NIGHT
Thursday night, 7:00 to 9:00 pm, same location as usual, the room just on
the lobby side of the swimming pool at the King Kam. This has turned into a
really fun evening for our mainland and international competitors. Bring
your flags, family and have some fun! Come and sign in....door prizes will
be given away! HEAVY pupus and no-host bar.

FRIDAY NIGHT COACHES MEETING
Information at this meeting needs to be heard by all participants, including
all escort and official boat captains. Make sure there is at least one
representative from each crew attending this meeting! The meeting is at 7:00
pm at the King Kamehameha Ballroom (off to the right of the front desk).

ESCORT BOATS
Need an escort boat for your changes crew? Have an escort boat for your your
race but it’s available for the other race? Call Beth at 808-937-6018.

HAWAIIAN RACER CLASS
The Malia changes race division has changed this year. The change crews will
now compete in Hawaiian Racers. Please note this if you are shipping a canoe
for this division or are hoping to borrow one.

RACE START PENALTY
Any canoe past the official start boats in the wahine and kane races will be
given a 15 minute time penalty.

Aloha, and see you Labor Day Weekend!

***PS...Monday, Sept. 4, is the day our club members come together to get
all the canoes that have been shipped from outer islands back up to Kawaihae
and tied down for the barge ride home. We average around 60 canoes to load,
trailer for an hour up to Kawaihae, and unload and tied down again. All in
about 8 hours. Our ohana works hard to get this task done. We would welcome
any help we can get for all, or part, of the process. In return, we would
welcome our helpers to the Mahalo Lunch. Uncle Bo really does it right...a
beautiful catered lunch at the King Kam and satisfaction for finishing off a
terrific weekend. How to help? We start at 6:00 am. Show up on the pier when
you can, preferably with sunscreen and comfy shoes on.
Just wanted to recognize here that we so appreciate the all the help we get
on shipping day from Kawaihae Canoe Club and the junior paddlers from Dana
and NAC...Mahalo!
