Where did the word "kanu" come from, and when did people start using it in reference to outriggers? Just wondering...

The word "Canoe" comes from the Taino culture (seafaring people as well, but in the Caribbean). "Kanu" may be just a phonetical play on that. ??

Kanu may have also come from the latin root KANOOS...

which was then adopted by the french and evolved into the varation of PNEUS.

and probably was used to describe outriggers in the 19th century when Germany had large holdings in the Western Pacific
