July 6 - 2003 Kukio Challenge Triathlon - Kona, Hawaii
Hi All,
This new type of multi-sport event, dubbed a "triathlon without wheels", was conceived by Thibert Lussiaa a year ago. The challenge consists of a 1/2 mile swim and 2 mile run followed by either a 3 mile paddleboard or a 4 mile outrigger canoe/surfski race.
Today's event was held in somewhat windy and choppy conditions under beautiful sunny skies at the spectacular Kukio Resort. Paddlers came from Maui, Oahu and Kauai to compete against the Big Island's finest. First craft across the line was an OC-1 paddled by Kauai's Kai Bartlett, followed closely by Kukio's own Mike Field on a surfski. The first paddleboard was manned by Hawaii Island's Jerry Bess, and the first woman to paddle to shore was Kona's Ronona Della Cioppa.
The Napoleon family's paddling dynasty was represented by three generations in today's event. Paddling legend, Nappy Napoleon was accompanied by sons and grandsons, Aaron (last year's winner), Joey, Joshua and Sepa. Other multigenerational finishers were Kai Bartlett, overall winner, and his mother, Mary Bartlett, who finished third in her age group.
Kukio Resort, sponsor of the race, served an excellent lunch catered by chef David Paul, and every participant was provided with an Xcel paddling jersey and unique awards were presented to all the winners.
Because this race has a restricted number of entrants, be sure to register early and don't miss this one next year!
