Interested to know what some of you do for training? During regatta and long distance I didn't lift any weights- just did tons of endurance training. I'm wondereing if that was a good thing or not? Plus I've been eating plenty carbs. I don't have any other means of comparison except from my teammates who eat spam and corned beef on a daily basis.

I run and also use a X country ski machine. Running keeps the aerobics up. Believe it or not, the ski machine trains the core really well for paddling. If you set the machine up with real ski bindings and loop the handgrips to optimize your grip, you can do torso rotations while your legs do the skiing motions. 10 minute intervals total of torso rotations over a 30 minute workout burns 1000 calories and does the trick. I don't race here but it really keeps me in shape for pulling.

Yes beer is an absolute must. Look at the top guys that win, they all drink like no tomorrow. Hell if they're doing so should I.
