heart rate monitors

thinking about getting one.. some guys at my club use them for OC-1 training and had good results.. is there a paddling specific one around? they all seem to be geared for runnin' bikin' or mountain climbing!!!! (Suunto 639.00???)

what do you use?

Lots of good units you can use for paddling. I use a Timex Bodylink with GPS and data recorder system for paddling which works well. It gives me heart rate and speed data mapped together which I can then download to my PC for analysis. One thing to watch out for is the Timex GPS unit is not waterproof (it's splashproof only and you will fry it in the ocean or large water if you swim) so what we do with ours is put it in a waterproof clear bag (small dry map bag) and it works like a charm.

I also have a Garmin 201 which is waterproof and great if you just want pace/speed distance and time data. Garmin has a new 305 model which gives you speed and heart rate (it's all waterproof) in one package but at a price of 360$ US.

If all you want is heart rate data you can buy a 60$ unit from many manufacturers like Polar that will work well.

Cheers

$54 polar HR monitor from Wal Mart.
I'm not a big wal mart fan but there are two things there that are pretty key--- their HR monitors and their $10 camel pack bladders.
