and how about the Hawaii women's crew?

I would link this on the main news section, but Tahitipresse.pf requires registration and it's a pain to get to the article (I hate that, Big Island newspapers do it too -- you should complain to them not to require registration).

Jeff, thanks for the updates... keep us posted in this thread.

Shell Va'a wins first stage of Hawaiki Nui outrigger canoe race

(Tahitipresse) - The Shell Va'a team won the first stage of the 2006 Hawaiki Nui Va'a outrigger canoe race from Huahine to Raiatea in the Leeward Islands Wednesday, crossing the finish line 5 minutes ahead of a surprising Hawaiian team.

Shell, winner of the 2002, 2003 and 2005 Hawaiki Nui races and who won earlier this month the prestigious Molokai canoe race in Hawaii, got off to a great start in the 2006 Hawaiki Nui race.

The team easily won the 44.5 km (27.7-mile) first leg of the race, with a selection of the best Hawaiian paddlers finishing at a surprising second place.

Shell will undoubtedly be once again the time to beat this year. But the Hawaiians proved Wednesday that they are ready to challenge the best Tahitian team.

"There was today a lot of boat waves. It was to our advantage. During the race, we tried to stay calm and focused", said one of the Hawaiian paddlers on French State's RFO Polynésie TV right after their team crossed the finish line.

Team Vairao, from Tahiti, and Team OPT (Tahitian post office) finished fourth and fifth.

The second stage of the race will be held Thursday, covering 26 kms (16.2 miles) from Raiatea to Taha'a inside the lagoon shared by the two islands.

The third and final leg, covering 58 km (36 miles) from Taha'a to Bora Bora, will be held Friday.

anyone know what team hawaii got panlized for?

#6 Thu, 11/02/2006 - 3:24pm

There is the note "tenue" after Team Hawaii. Does this mean they were held for something?
If so, do we know for what and when?

#7 Thu, 11/02/2006 - 3:37pm

hey i just looked up tenue online and it means behaviour so...who knows...if anyone knows what actually happened let us all know...

#8 Fri, 11/03/2006 - 11:03am

According to Al Ching's (Danny's dad) website (www.mudbrookracingpaddles.com), seat five broke about a minute into the race. Seat 5 had to paddle on his knees the entire race. They suspect it had been "stomped on" at some point. Someone had also urinated in their kanu.

#9 Fri, 11/03/2006 - 11:07am

What would tenue mean in this situation is that probably somebody forgot to put back on his t-shirt and/or hat at at the end of the race...

OPT -> 3rd
TEAM HAWAII ->4th

#11 Fri, 11/03/2006 - 2:36pm

Read the details on the website! Man, that's messed up. Someone felt threatened enough to do something like that!

#12 Fri, 11/03/2006 - 4:39pm

i think you were very hurted by tahitian victory in the molokai race, to say something idiot like that.

Why do we have to do that, did you (hawaiian) wins something this year: NO.
So tahitian have no reasons to do something like that, and here visitors are welcome.
We all try to get more strangers teams in the Hawaiki nui race.

you just need to work harder on the canoe, and talk less.

#13 Fri, 11/03/2006 - 5:16pm

jfaumeran. Just read about what happened. How do you know someone did not do it. To me it sounds like it could be true. You ask, why would someone do something like that. Maybe its because Hawaii placed second on the first day and someone in Tahiti didnt like it. Hawaii had a throw together crew. Their paddlers belong to diffenent clubs and probably dont practice much together. Scary huh. Think about it. What if they train all year together. Maybe someone is scared of competing as equals. Bad for the sport and bad for the race. Hopefully this never happens to Tahitian crews in HAWAII !!!!! Bra.

#14 Fri, 11/03/2006 - 7:10pm

bummer if that's what really happened. especially the piss part. it disrespects the entire paddling culture, not just the hawaiian paddlers.

congrats on a great race though. next time camp on the beach with the boat i guess!

#15 Fri, 11/03/2006 - 7:27pm

Jfaumeran,

"you just need to work harder on the canoe, and talk less" Get this straight, the seat broke. It was unfortunate but I don't think talking in the boat had anything to do with the seat breaking, so keep the damn comments to yourself. We are all proud of what Team Hawaii accomplished in the first leg of the Hawaiki Nui, and what happened in the 2nd leg is just bad luck. S!!@# happens. No one was caught doing anything and until that time we have to bite our tongue and reserve judgement.

We were awestruck when Shell Va'a won Molokai by 15 minutes, and if no one congratulated them on their win after a few days on an online forum then "wah". Begging for praise on how they won the Molokai is sad. Everyone at the finish line and after party could only talk about how awesome the Tahitians were so I don't know how much more "felicitations" you want. Did someone go to a Tahitian online forum and shove the previous three molokai victories in Ra'i's face. I hope not, but I doubt anyone would do that.

Everyone respects the teams from Tahiti. No incident (I don't think) has ever happened like this when they come to Molokai. In fact I know a guy that went diving for Nenue and tako for Ra'i when they were here in Molokai and Sonny Bradley himself, got a top boat (Bradley Lightning) for the all three Tahitian crews. The Tahitians are well taken care of in Hawaii and I am sure that Team Hawaii has received this type of Aloha from the people in Tahiti. I refuse to believe Tahitians would do something this malicious to a visiting team that did well in the first leg of one the most prestigious canoe races in Tahiti and the world. Especially since Tahitians and Hawaiians are related by blood and the love of paddling

Your online manners suck, don't come here and shove how good "your" team and the Tahitians are into our face.

#16 Fri, 11/03/2006 - 7:37pm

k, i don't think we should point any fingers...everyone seems to be going for the tahitians but that doesn't mean a tahitian did that to them...and even if someone from tahiti did they don't represent the whole of tahiti...i'm sure there are people in other countries who would be idiot enough to do something like that but that doesn't mean whe should blame the whole country...unless its a conspiracy (which is unlikely), it was probably just one or a few people who felt threatened or had too much to drink or something....and question for jfaurman...on ur blog it says kai never mentioned that on tv...so did it never happen or what??

#17 Fri, 11/03/2006 - 8:42pm

Jeff- no one said Tahitians did it. I just said someone must have felt threatened enough to do it. Who knows.

If I were you I'd stop with this whole Tahitian vs. Hawaiian crap too. You shouldn't be a little instigator by saying comments like "did you (Hawaiian) win any race this year: NO." That is completely unneccesary. I'm sure manyTahitians wouldn't appreciate some of your comments. Like on that blog of yours saying you know why hawaiians are far behind Tahitians- cause they talk too much.

If you're so hot, then why aren't you paddling with Shell Va'a guys? Maybe it is you who talk too much.

#18 Fri, 11/03/2006 - 9:31pm

kaiolohia,

Did you read my title (sdc2447), so if you talk to much and read nothing, I can not do anything for you.

And as I saw, so many post, this confirm that you talk to much.

OK guys, more practise and see you next year.

#19 Sat, 11/04/2006 - 8:55am

most guys on this thread feel the need to prove themselves better than another human being.

secondly, everyone wants to get the last word and look like the smart guy.

mellow out guys, people live and die every day. paddling is just a game. lets not all pretend like we represent the entire culture or population we live in.

i quote my father, "in a pissing contest, everyone gets wet feet."

#20 Sat, 11/04/2006 - 9:02am

You're right. Plus there's no sense in arguing with a guy who doesn't know a lick of English grammar. It's like going back & forth with a toddler.

Your Dad sounds like a cool guy...

#21 Sat, 11/04/2006 - 10:15am

There's obviously some some misunderstandings going around. I think sdc2447 was referring to Al Ching's article, not making accusations himself...

Kaiolohia, jfaumeran does deserve credit for posting -- more so because English is probably a 2nd language. Why should he post here and help tell us what's going on in Tahiti? Even if you disagree with him, there's no reason for insults... I don't want to get sucked in into this any more than I have. Just try to play nice people.

Now that I've had my last word, I did get an email from Luke today. A couple things he said:

Tahiti is incredible.. this is def. one of the most amazing trips ive ever been on. we did not do so well in the races becquse everyone up here is amqzing at pqddling [...]. but it is incredible being here for this rqce.. it is huge huge huge.

also

everyone here is super super nice; , from the moment we got here weve been treated perfectly;. it is amazing how nice everybody is.

he had a little trouble with the french keyboqrd as you can see.

#22 Sat, 11/04/2006 - 10:47am

Well good for him.

Yes, he has made some good contributions here. I even agreed with him on his felicitations post, but if he wants to report from his homefront it should be on an objective platform, not a subjective one that includes some pretty degrading remarks in my honest opinion. I stand by my grammar comment. I don't think it's as insulting as bringing up this "Hawaiian" card he likes to throw in people's face, but if you want to let that slide and give him special treatment because english is his second language then fine- we'll chalk it up to Turrets or some kind of deficiency...

#23 Sat, 11/04/2006 - 12:28pm

Keizo,
Thanks for clearing that up. I was simply reporting what was being reported by Al Ching. I also don't think Al was making any disparaging remarks about Tahitians, only reporting what the team had experienced. Like any sport (or sector of society) 99% of the people are good...it's the fringe 1% that give others a bad name.

jfaumeran....chill dude. It's a discussion board.

#24 Sat, 11/04/2006 - 1:20pm

but if you want to let that slide and give him special treatment

That is not my intent.

All I wanted to do was reiterate that we should all keep personal insults to a minimum. I may have mixed that message with my personal reaction to your comment. That is all.

Aloha

I heard what has been posted on this website. This is the first time I have ever seen this blog. Like most blogs it is foolish and spreads rumors. Our team has already heard about rumors spreading from this website from very influential people in the paddling community. Its amazing how much you people yack about paddling. The seat was old and the nails were rusted. The seat broke in the first minute of the second day of racing and it hurt our results. Also, the canoe smelt bad every morning. Most canoes smell bad if they have a canvas on for five days. The Tahitians DID NOT SABOTAGE our team. Several members of this year's team have a strong relationship with the Tahitians. The rumors that you people spread on this website make us look bad. Mahalo to Pirae for lending our team a canoe and mahalo to the race committee for an amazing canoe race.

You've all heard that saying about how arguing on the Internet is like competing in the Special Olympics...but it's fun to read =)

#27 Sun, 11/05/2006 - 3:08pm

Hey Mike,
Welcome back - great job representing Hawaii and thank you for putting some sense into this bull***. It's good to know what really happened. Get the guys together and ramp up the training, next year.......
Renee

#28 Sun, 11/05/2006 - 3:14pm

Aloha Mike,

Thanks for your perspective on what has been up to now, a rumor mongers heaven.

There are a quite a few people, around the world, that love outrigger paddling who don't live in paddling Mecca and we (OK me specifically) get our daily fix from ocpaddler.
Some of our perception has come from other sources i.e. Al Ching's threads on the Mudbrook site. (No finger pointing, just limited info from another source.) As well as the babble from some you have read here.
I for one have tried to temper all this information with the knowledge that there is always "three sides to every story".
Without ocpaddler to give us some insight into the most important aspect of my recreational life, I would be in some kind of recovery program. 90 percent of the people that use this forum are fairly well adjusted human beings with similar outlooks on these things...of course there is always the other 10%.
It would be great if we got more from the "elite" paddler's ( I am not being the slightest bit condescending, as you are part of that group by virtue of your ability.) perspective to adjust our filter.

The first time I met you; you walked into Island Paddler and talked me through my first paddle purchase.
You are Aloha and Paddling as far as I am concerned.
Mahalo Nui Loa.

#29 Sun, 11/05/2006 - 3:22pm

Well no matter what everybody is beefing about, bottom line is we ALL had choken fun down there in Tahiti =) The competition is mean, paddling is such a big deal down there, and regardless of how we all did this last trip, the tahitians still want our Jerseys =) As for my experience, we were treated with so much aloha =) I want to thank everyone down there who helped us out, there is just too many people to list. And how's this, one thing that would never happen here in Hawaii..... in a drunken stupor, i left my digital camera at the checkout stand of a supermarket on Raiatea, didn't realize it until the next day when I was already on my way to Bora Bora, and when I got there, a tahitian friend of mine had been contacted by a random person who had found my camera, recognized me in some of the pics, and made the effort to track me down and get it back to me. And in spite of the fact that I had to go straight to Queens ER when we got off the plane to get an antibiotic shot in my ass to treat who know what kind of infections i have, I had the time of my life and it's always worth while to go there. Aloha.

p.s. team bradley/ruahatu came in 2nd place, Venus Va'a kicked our butts.

#30 Sun, 11/05/2006 - 9:16pm

To begin with, Team Hawaii wants to congradulate Shell Va'a for their outstanding season and for being true competitors in the sport and helping to raise the level. We also take our hats off to the Hawaiki Nui Va'a race commity for putting on a top notch race that really tests not only the physical aspect of a paddler, but more importantly, it tests our mental toughness. The Tahitian people welcomed us with lots of aloha and showed us kindness and generosity from the heart.
Now in regards to the rumors floating around about our canoe being sabatoged, it really upsets me to see how quickly the coconut wireless likes to spread dirty gossip before any facts are proven. I have been honored to be chosen to paddle with Team Hawaii these past few Hawaiki Nui races, and although the Tahitians do hold a certain pride in what they do, they did not stoop down to the level of sabatoge in this race. Our canoe was about five years old and the seat broke after the start of the race. Our canoe was utilized the day before by the juniors for a nine man race and that may have had something to do with putting stress on the seat. It is our fault for not thoroughly checking the boat before the race.
Regardless of the unfortunate incident, we would appreciate for those of us here in Hawaii to respect the sport and the Tahitiians for their accomplishments before we so quickly cast judgement. We as Team Hawaii grew and learned from this experience and look forward to competing for many years to come in order to carry on the traditions of outrigger paddling to the next generation.
On behalf of the team, we truly appreciate the support and enthusiasm from our Hawaiian family and supporters. We all just need to be careful to find out the facts before we start rumors that are unfounded. A special mahalo to Sophie and Penny from Huahine for opening their hospitality and hearts to us. We couldn't be a part of such an awesome group of men without the founders of Team Hawaii, Walter Guild and Jim Foti. Thanks guys for all you do and for believing in us. You is very appreciated beyond words.

From the Heart,

Thibert Lussia'a

Hi,
So the real sabotage was when somebody caught an infection on the okole! hahaha ! (just to make fun).

I'm glad to read that the "tahitians" had nothing to do with what happened to Team Hawaii. I would have felt very bad about that.

This is an oppurtunity for me to congratulate Team Hawaii that did their very best on all 3 days, ( the girls too).
I specially took 3 days off just to watch the race on TV (on live) AWESOME !!!! Day 1 was no doubt the best to me cause there was a small to medium size swell with some wind too (just enough to see the ama go up sometimes), and the camera man would focus on Team Hawaii, making their way through, ( We must admit it, we don't paddle the same way, but either way, it's the results that count), and especially surfing constantly. It looked so easy from my TV set! Fantastic performance, and I'm sure you guys scared few local teams.
Hope to see you guys again next year!

oh,and please, you may not critisize my english<<

mauruuru roa

wish we had live TV broadcasts of paddling in hawaii...

#33 Tue, 11/07/2006 - 7:55am

I was following Team Hawaii's results by watching this blog and the Tahitian Press. I myself was guilty of "spreading the rumor" to a few fellow paddlers because we love our sport and we briefly talk about ALL the races and results. I "ass"umed that Danny Ching's Dad was reporting factual information on his www.mudbrookracingpaddles.com website because his son was racing in the Team Hawaii crew. I guess truth is always subjective, there are no absolutes.

#34 Tue, 11/07/2006 - 2:13pm

Breaking news!! The saboteur of the team Hawaii boat has been found! We have recieved information from the CIA that Osama Bin Laden himself was the culprit. Lets all go kick his ass. I heard he's having dinner tonight with bush
