The wavechaser series is a great place to meet paddlers and race at any level. Each of their events has races for beginner, intermediate and advanced paddlers. If you havn't hooked up with the paddlers in Redwood city contact Kilohana Outrigger, They have a large population of paddlers that go out all the time. Here are their web sites. www.wavechaser.com and www.kilohanaocc.org

For the Wavechaser races, check http://www.wavechaser.com and join the wavechaser mailing list on http://groups.yahoo.com . Wavechaser races have 2, 6, and 10 mile courses; general descriptions are on the Wavechaser web site.

http://www.ncoca.com has links and contact information for outrigger canoe clubs in northern California.

Vince,

The conditions in Santa Cruz have predominately been flat to medium rollers in January. As you're new to the sport, the Novice couse is a perfect event to start with. The distance will be 2-3 miles primarily flat water course...a course that a Novice can cover in 30-45 minutes. Any OC canoe is allowed in addition to surfskis and kayaks. You'll also need to review the www.Wavechaser website for safety equipment (pfd's). The Short course will be 4-6 miles (depending on the conditions) over flat to small roller conditions.

For the Novice course you need to sign a NCOCA waiver (which can be found under the forms link at www.nococa.com). You'll also need to bring your own canoe...or make arranagements with your outrigger club to borrow a club canoe.

Other than that....you'll need to be able to fog a mirror in order to participate in the Novice event. Have fun and stay dry.

There is also another Outrigger canoe club in Redwood City; Hui Wa'a / Canoe and Kayak. We're located at 1450 Maple Street at the BIAC/Biar Island Aquatic Center. Check out www.kanuclub.org for more info.
