Video - On The Water

Luke, Chris, and Keizo -

AWESOME video. Watched it once by myself, then made goto jr. watch it with me. (he kept interrupting during the good parts so I had to smack him) The only thing I would change is that it's a little too positive. Too much about fun and good vibes. And I would DEFINITELY change the soundtrack to include more "f&k"s, and "motherf&ker"s. Other than that - f*&king sweet!

Ditto that, what a fabulous OC-1 paddling video. The shots with the camera fixed to the iako are awesome. This is exactly why I got into outrigger in the first place. Despite my distance from warm water (Labrador Current, Icebergs), the necessity of always wearing a PFD and drysuit, the difficulty of shipping canoes to Newfoundland, the lack of any other OC-1 paddlers out here, I still was so thrilled by the absolute freedome and exhilaration of this sport that I became a fanatic. Its just as thrilling and exhilarating in cold waters!

Keep up the great work guys!

Awesome job guys and you couldn't have posted it at a better time. You've really captured the feeling of a great surfing run with the footage and music. I watched it twice and I can't wait to watch it again.

pretty cool guys. unfortunately, i have no son like goto. so i made my dog watch it with me. he was so stoked he started humping my leg. i was so stoked i didn't even notice what he was doing till the video ended.

simply awesome. made me want to go out and get back in a canoe for once. also some great remarks from various paddlers as well, good job on the interviews.

hoooo bulle the vid be off da hizzle. haha great footage. the music truly sets the mood of this video. i showed these videos to other paddlers in school. back at kauai high mrs.dungan saw me on the site watching a video, and when she saw luke and keizo she told the librarian "those were my favorite students with their project on canoe hulls and wind" then she let everyone in the class go onto the site. thats how good the videos are. haha

haha--- i think mrs dungan was talking about the project on canoe hulls and dimples.... but that's awesome that you guys watched it in class cameron..
eh-- thanks everybody for the comments-- yesterday i was pretty burnt out from ever working on a video again-- today i'm all psyched on it. So thanks a lot-- the whole point of making it is for people to enjoy it, so i'm glad you guys all liked it...
also...... there was a lack of female paddling shots and interviews (one of each).. and i apologize for that. Will try and remedy that next time.
also..... this version had Karel's name spelled wrong in the credits (my sister, who doesn't paddle or know the paddlers was the one who noticed.. kind of funny).
i think that Keizo (if anyone doesn't know Keizo and they're curious to know what he looks like... he's the one in the video with the big grin while he's paddling) will put the other version up tomorrow night-- the beginning is a little bit different and hopefully everybody's names are spelled right this time.
anyways-- thanks again for the comments-- and thank you also to everyone who is in the video-- and a huge huge mahalo to everyone who's donated--- 100% of that is going towards paying off the equipment, and every little bit helps a lot. But no pressure at all to donate, we weren't really expecting to get any donations-- the sole goal of the video is to make people want to go out and paddle, and to show others who think we're crazy why we all spend so much of our time doing what we do--- so as long as people enjoy the video then we're more than stoked to make it.

Luke, a truly excellent piece of work. It's not just a video, it's art! I think the world of outrigger racing really needs more exposure, and if you are able to put this in a dvd format, you should definitely forward it to the media. Sports shows love "visuals" above all else, and your video has it in spades! Networks like ESPN, National Geographic TV (partnered with MSNBC) and the Discovery Channel come to mind. I recently saw an IMAX movie that had footage of kiteboarding. Can you imagine an IMAX film of an outrigger race, filmed from sea level from a helicopter steadycam? These folks are always looking for the next thing in sports, and it seems like outrigger racing has remained undiscovered by big sports media. Also, if you are ever able to make the video available for purchase on dvd, I'll buy it and I will bet many others would too. If I could get one, I can show it to a friend who works at the Discovery Channel here in the Washington DC area. Thank you again for putting this to film, watching it will help us get through the winter here on the E. Coast!

Chris and Keizo deserve most of the credit, they did all the actual creative work on it (Chris is my brother-in-law, and he used to be a professional editor), so if it's art it's because of them, i just did the grunt work and got to fill in empty spaces with those ama shots :) By the way-- those ama shots were taken out by like Diamond Head Buoy on a normal day-- i haven't gotten a chance to actually use the camera on a real run with some real bumps... could be incredible though. A friend just sent me this link http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=dume+run&hl=en it's a couple of videos from a helmet camera from a run in California--- i haven't looked through all of them but from what i saw the footage looks pretty cool-- those helmet cameras are the way to film paddling though. If you film from a boat, it ALWAYS makes the ocean seem smaller than it actually is-- if you watch our video and watch Manny droppipng in on some of those bumps from the solo-- the bump is bigger than his canoe.... but for some reason the scale gets thrown off and you can't tell how big it actually is. But with the helmet camera and putting it on the actual canoe-- i think you'll be able to tell the actual size of the ocean and the speed of the canoe.. anyways, that was a little more in depth on helmet cameras than i had planned on going.
But about videos--- yeah Kayakneil-- i think it would be incredible if outrigger canoeing became the next big thing in sports---- and i think that videos are one of the ways for that to happen (i actually just wrote a paper on the subject for my Marketing Class... the paper was horrible, but the topic was interesting).... if someone who had the right equipment came along and waited for the right day... an incredible paddling movie could be made. It's a beautiful sport-- but it's super hard to portray that on film..
And NoviceC--- it's that waveblade that makes everyone look good.... that canoe is amazing (it's also for sale...)
Aannnywayssss----- i'm rambling... because i'm procastinating-- but thanks again for the comments--

luke,

we did those vids from the dume runs... figured it'll make it way over here eventually..it's actually not from a helmet cam (nothing that fancy).. i rigged up a homemade head cam by using a canon elph digital camera, a waterproof bag housing, and a head strap from a headlight...strapped it on over my hat and voila, instant head cam... it is a great way to show what's happening to the boat, dropping in and connecting bumps...

the camera is small, the bag housing is cheap and small ($35), and duct taped to the head strap...not the prettiest thing, but does the trick, and not too bad in terms of getting in your way.. one of these runs, we need to put the thing on danny's head and see what he's doing..

you can get the bag housing on ebay:

To Luke , Keizo and Team , this is great video ! i have been sending the link to friends and family who have never been paddling before.I have always tried to explain why i paddle out in the open ocean. They could never understand and always thought i was nuts( still do) but after they watched this they can see the great enjoyment "we" paddlers have out there. This video is defiantly going to be a tool used to perpetuate the sport so thanks for putting the time , energy and money in to making this awesome video.
