This is the only woman’s iron outrigger canoe race in the world. We do this race to honor Queen Ka‘ahumanu, a strong, athletic ruler who did much to free society from the stifling kapu system. To help us honor her and her sisters-in-spirit, our women paddlers, we are requesting that any men who may be tempted to paddle during this race, please respect our wishes and save your energy for tomorrow’s Great Kahakaloa Race.

The brother race, The Great Kahakaloa Race, is held the next day, August 24 and goes from Kahului Harbor over to Ka'anapali Beach. This is a race for experienced men. The catagories are OPEN 9, MASTER 35+ 9, and Senior Master 45+ which is a 10 man crew. Escort boats are mandatory as is communication equipment and towing ropes on the escort boat. Canvas is also mandatory. This race is always challenging. We have canoes to lend.
