LAHAINA — Kahana Canoe Club finished first in the men’s division of the George Paoa Memorial Race on Saturday. Lae Ula O Kai topped the women’s division in winds between 15-25 mph and large waves.
Kahana won the men’s race from Hanakaao Beach to Honolua Bay and then back to D.T. Fleming Beach, an estimated distance of about 14 miles. The winning crew crossed the finish line in 1 hour, 36 minutes and 21 seconds. Lahaina was second in 1:38.40, followed by Lahaina No. 2 in 1:42.08, Lahaina No. 3 in 1:45.28 and Kahana No. 2 in 1:52.29.
Kahana also won the men’s masters in 1:40.57.
Lae Ula O Kai won the women’s race from D.T. Fleming Beach to Leilani’s on the Beach at Kaanapali. The women’s race was an estimated 12 miles. Lae Ula O Kai was clocked in 1:03.0, just ahead of Lae Ula O Kai No. 2 in 1:04.09. Lae Ula O Kai No 3 was third in 1:05.03, followed by Lahaina in 1:08.20, Lahaina No. 2 in 1:09.36 and Kahana in 1:11.36.
Kihei won the women’s masters in 1:10.40 and Lahaina was the top mixed crew in 1:11.08.
