Friggin Media. RE: sick boy from ala wai

I hate the media sometimes. Check this article from today's starbulletin.
http://starbulletin.com/2007/03/08/news/story03.html

Headline states that "canal suspected in boys illness"

later in the article it states that it is unlikely that the student got sick from the ala wai.

i guess the moral of the story is wash you clothes and wash your body. Who doesn't throw their shorts in the back of their truck and wear it again later?

Poops

How dare they accuse the beloved Ala Wai of causing the infection! I always wondered why you Townies insist on paddling in that water, seems like there's plenty of ocean over there available. I generally try to avoid all types of poopy brown canals when paddling.

Poopier the better in my mind...

You otta try Kaelepulu Stream (Buzz's Canal) in Kailua-home of the Wndward sides most agressive Staph infections.

Dude I grew up in that stream and the lake it feeds to. I've eaten fish and crabs from there. Swam, paddled, walked and everything. There's some monster barracuda in there.

I heard the stream by Pinky's is even worse. They got some weird stuff crawling out of the swamp...

That's a pretty poopie stream. Just how I like it...

Poopppp

I was gonna say "How's Yum Yum Tree Canal" to really date myself. But, yeah, that one's also pretty nasty.

Paddled in the ala wai since 1989. Swam in the ala wai while learning to kayak and C-1 in the early ninties...never had staph. People need to learn how to shower nowaday.

That said, there is something to be said for eating poo. But it shouldn't be done from a stream...only directly from the balloon knot (rectum) of the one you love.

I thought this was a family show!

I still think that the State, City or whom ever has jurisdiction over issuing permits to paddling clubs for use of the Ala Wai is culpable for injuries resulting from contamination. Either clean it up and make it a safe water way for paddlers/recreationalist or shut it down and prevent people from using it, period. If a landowner allows invitees or guests onto its property with knowledge of a latent defect or dangerous condition and fails to take reasonable action to prevent injury or harm, Rick Fried, Esq. would be all over its arse in a second.

Yeah, I totally agree, EXCEPT for the fact that if we start telling the authorities to either clean it up or prevent people from using it, guess which option is easier? Permits will be revoked and clubs will have to find other sites (not an easy task unless you want to commute to other parts of the island). I think it's pretty hard to thoroughly clean up the Ala Wai since every time it rains all kinds of crap (or poop) gets dumped into it. Anyway, I think technically the permits are for "canoe storage". I can't remember if they say anything at all about practicing on the water. Bottom line -- shower well with lots and lots of soap and cover cuts with layers of antibiotic goo. Better yet, just grease yourself up completely - glue sandpaper to your hands so the paddle doesn't slip.

Wow, you guys are "interesting". balloon knot eh, I have to put that one in my writer's scrapbook. Way too visual for everyday use though. What ever happened to the "brown starfish".

As far as state regulators go, don't do anything to get THOSE little weenies involved in anything. People say "they" need to do something, when they should be saying "I" need to do something. Nothing good ever comes from getting people who live off your taxes to do something. Costs you a few more bucks and they just screw it up. You want something cleaned, get together with everyone else that cares and get it done. Find the folks that crap it up and make them stop. One at a time. It's how the real stuff gets done. Keep the lawyers in reserve. They are like nuclear weapons. If everyone else has one, you need one too, but it all goes bad when you use them.

Incidentally, I have board shorts and rash guards in the back of my jeep that smell like Puunene road on a bad day. They're nothing compared to the kind of crap you can get in a hospital. I nearly lost my arm and my life getting a torn rotator cuff repaired. Mutated hospital staph. Nothing like it. I don't remember anything but the hallucinations (the nurses were Mayan death gods). Five surgeries later to clean stuff out they finally decided they didn't need to amputate.

I'll take the canal any day.
