Iron vs. switching paddlers

I'm relatively new to outrigger paddling (my background is in flatwater K1 and surf ski) and was wondering if someone could enlighten me as to why some races are "iron" and some allow the switching in and out of paddlers from a support boat? Were early races all "iron"? How did the concept of the switching of paddlers develop.

Thanks for any schooling on the history of this...

PS--seems to me "Iron" is the way to go for serious paddlers...

...or (at least) that saying this might actually stir up some conversation.

yes it is true, only real men will paddle iron. all the rest who win molokai are such floozies. how could we even think them to be real paddlers?

ja ist es zutreffend, nur wirkliche Männer Eisen schaufeln. aller Rest, das Molokai gewinnen, sind solche Floozies. wie könnten wir sie sogar denken, um reale paddlers zu sein?

it is applicable, only real men iron digs. all remainder, which Molokai win, are such Floozies. how could we even think it, in order to be material paddlers?
