what a weird finish...why donʻt they just finish at Hilton Hawaiian Village...better parking....not like it ainʻt long enough for the long course guys to have to go all the way to the buoy and then back upwind for 2miles after paddling for 20.....do the guys that make this course paddle????

What I had heard about the finish is to try to get Lulus involved as they are a sponsor of and that is the finish for this year's Molokai Solo. Too bad that they had to abandon last year's course or couldn't bring back Hawaii Kai to Ewa Beach! Not too many people in favor of upwind especially at the end of a race!

State Race course: First off, yes, those that chose the course paddle. Foti Bros. - John and Jim Foti, with some consultation of other paddlers, including but not limited to Karel and Kai, came up with this new course. Reasons, in brief, are to create a course that is more spectator friendly, more media friendly and thus more sponsor friendly. Our sport is in the slow lane because our races leave the beach and then return to a beach 3 hours later. Not very fun to watch, not very exciting for the media, nor very enticing for a sponsor to get a bang for their buck because the media is not too interested. We wanted to put up prize money for this race, but couldn't generate enough funds to do so. If this race comes off well and the sponsors see that they got a little more exposure, perhaps it could have this in the future. It still has all the surf runs for the lazy Hawaiian paddler, but you have to be a paddler too so must be prepared for some non surfing sections.

Finish line at Kapahulu Groin. Kapahulu Groin is right in Waikiki, just fronting Lulu's Surf Club. Lulu's is the main sponsor and will be hosting the post race festivities. The races have been lacking a good gathering and party place for paddlers to enjoy and relax after. Lulu's is offering to change this. So we want to give them a chance to support you, the paddler. And your family and friends can sit inside Lulu's and watch the finish. It is a big open place, and there is plenty of parking at the zoo and surrounding Kapiolani Park. Logistically, don't have to figure out the Ewa Beach Car drop, etc...

Paddle in to Hawaii Kai: It is a check point so that spectators and maybe even media can actually, for once, watch a small portion of the race. It can offer the participants a chance to get some special food and drink that they don't want to carry along at the halfway point, etc... and for the sponsors, it gives another opportunity to be exposed. If you have ever been part of the Coastal Relay, these check points are the funnest part of the race. Plus it is something different and a state champion should be able to paddle a little in the flat water. You have to be able to do more than just surf if you truley want to be good.

Start in Waimanalo: Trying to give more distance to the race and make it a little different than all the normal, and let's say redundant Makapuu to Waikiki races. Plus the Lamanz start will keep the starting line honest. And better for the spectator and media.... and therefore sponsors.

End of race..... Magic Island Head Bouy and back to the groin/Lulu's: This is still under consideration because of the desire of some paddlers to make the race longer. It can easily be eliminated if "enough is enough". But, it is a race and the extra flat in the end makes a good paddler a great paddler if you can handle. So we'll see about this. Maybe we drop a bouy outside Pops or something instead, to shorten it up, but keep the paddlers off the reef at Public's and do a small swoop through Waikiki.... this last part is just a detail.

In summary: Have to try some new things to take the sport to the next level. So, please support our effort.

Mahalo,
Jim

Couldn't agree with you more, Jimeson! I've always felt that a good upwind slog is a great way to determine true paddling strength. Surfing, of course, is way funner but it's good to add this balance to the race. I'm sure the true bulls would prefer this type of course, anyway.

I have a real problem of putting up money for a States race. Does that mean just anybody can come in from anywhere and win and be 'State Champion?' It should be a requirement that you live in the state.

At first I was skeptical about the race course, but I like the idea that it does not favor one type of boat or paddler, ie surfing.

Around a buoy at pop's and along waikiki as much as we can would be pretty cool coming along the beach. letting everyone see
