Kanaka Ikaika State Race course details

Foti Bros., Hurricane and Kanaka present the 2007 Lulu’s State Championship

Surf and weathere pending for the Finish line. Otherwise as stated below

Long Course

Race start: 9:00 AM Waimanalo Beach Park

Long Course:

Part 1: Lamanz start; standing waist deep in the water. Go straight out to a marker approximately 1 km. off the beach, which will guide all canoes and kayaks around the reef at Shriner’s.

Part 2: From the marker in Part 1, it is jungle rules to the bath house in Hawaii Kai. All paddlers must round the check point buoy.

Part 3: All paddlers must round the blinker buoy. Then jungle rules through Maunaloa bay and around Diamond Head into Waikiki.

Part 4: Next mark will be a buoy just outside the surf line between Canoes and Pops (directly out from the Royal Hawaiian Hotel). Take a right turn around the buoy and the finish will be between a white stationary swim buoy just outside the groin (wall) at Kapahulu (outside Queen’s beach), and the groin itself. From the buoy off Waikiki to the finish is approximately 1/2 mile.

Part 5: Exit the ocean at Kaimana (or wherever you choose), clean up, walk to Lulu’s for the awards party, with live music, food, drink and give aways. Lulu’s is just behind the groin on the corner of Kapahulu and Kalakaua; second floor of the Park Shore Hotel.

Short Course:

Race Start: 10:00 AM Hawaii Kai

Course

Part 1: Lamanz start off the beach. Round the blinker buoy. From there it is Jungle Rules to Waikiki

Part 2: Next mark is the head buoy off Magic Island. Make a right hand turn on the RED head buoy. This buoy is approximately 1/2 mile off Magic Island.

Part 3: Head Back to Kapahulu groin off Waikiki and finish between the white stationary swim buoy and the groin, just like the long course.

Part 4: Exit the ocean at Kaimana (or wherever you choose), clean up, walk to Lulu’s for the awards party, with live music, food, drink and give aways. Lulu’s is just behind the groin on the corner of Kapahulu and Kalakaua; second floor of the Park Shore Hotel.

What is the reason for a LeMans Start? Since there is a leash rule for Kanaka Ikaika, it will be difficult to comply with or simply ignored in favor of trying to get a good start. It seems, at least for the short course that all of the starts in Hawaii Kai have been quite fair this year.

Jim, Thanks for the detailed info. The last party at Lulu's for the Oahu Championship was great. BTW, Le Mans is a city in France where they start an auto race by running to their cars. Dr. Lamaze was a French MD who developed a drug free form of childbirth. I guess a Lamanz start is whne we warm up with Kegel exercies, and the "Push" the boat forward.
