Oct 4 - OCEANSWELL Waipuhi OC1 Series Race 4 Results

This weekend Coral Sea Outrigger Canoe Club hosted round 4 of the OCEANSWELL Waipuhi OC1 Series 2003 and it was a true test of the toughest !!

Competitors launched from a pontoon in the river and then headed (4kms) out against the tide and into some strong head winds and currents to cross the channel between Magnetic Island and the mainland.
Paddlers rounded one of the channel markers and then strapped themselves in for one of the best surfing runs (9.5kms) the series has seen in a long time. The waves were curling and the canoes just skimmed from one to the next linking up wave after wave. Paddles up and enjoy the ride!

Mick DeRooy made the most of the conditions romping it home in 1.15.2 to nearest rival Darrell Thoroughgood in 1.20.4 and Tony Bowman in 1.29.0. The masters men had a good showing with Brad Seawright finishing first in 1.27.3 followed by Gary Smedley 1.34.1 and Steve Johnson 1.38.1.

The ladies did it really tough, with Sue still getting used to her newPiranha canoe and Faye arriving late due to bushfires closing the highway. Congratulations to first time waipuhi paddler Chris Barkle who hit the beach in 2.17.2 (an hour behind Mick) - a really top effort Chris !!
