molo solo coverage

i'm really impressed with the way that the surfski community is covering the solo.. current race updates, profiles, strategies, seeding... kind of like a real sporting event instead of a niche sport...it may be that this is a new thing for them also, but it's good.

see www.surfski.info (link on the solo website)... don't know if it has to do with the new organizer (chalupsky and epic), and his high profile, or that the surfski community is more savvy, but the oc1 and oc6 race community can learn some lessons, considering that we're a larger group (as far as i know.. could be wrong)... right now we get a preview article in the advertiser or starbulletin (maybe) and an article with the results, and maybe a post here at ocpaddler.. and that's in hawaii, in the mainland, there's really nothing except occasional race stories after the fact from different sites (al ching at mudbrook, or scora, or mindy's video blogs)

look at how surfing now has live webcasts of the ASP events, which get more coverage and allow them to have it in prime surfing locations, but still allow the sponsors to get exposure.. instead of huntington pier, we have cloudbreak and teahupoo..everyone wins.

"wie mich… UNOFFICIALLY berichtet wurde"

"as was reported to me… UNOFFICIALLY"

i'm only as sure as the person who was telling me. he was in the top 10, he could have been going crazy from exertion.

Full results for both surski and outrigger are online now at http://www.surfski.info/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=411&It.... Looks like about almost half of the people weren't able to finish?

Yesterday was a brutal day in the Ka'iwi channel. My husband and I were fortunate NOT to be paddling yesterday because we were escorting one of the top Hawai'i male OC1. I was really amazed by the lack of support given to many paddlers by their escort boats. Over 3 hours into the race we could hear over the radio that paddlers were STILL without their escort! At least 3 paddlers that we personally spoke to, who obviously didn't have a chase boat with them, said that their escort "broke down" and that they were okay and they turned down our offer of food and drink. Not 20 minutes later we would see those same paddlers with their canoe/surfski on a different escort boat because they pulled out of the race.
Overall, the day was a mental challenge, being out there for 2 1/2 hours longer then previous years for the winners and longer for everyone else. I really have to commend those who finished the race. It really doesn't matter what place the paddlers came in or what their time was because finishing was the challenge yesterday.
