Aunty Mary Jane Heihei
Results of the 14th Annual Aunty Mary Jane Heihei.
This race was conceived by Mary Jane Kahanamoku 14 years ago since no Moku O Hawaii regattas are scheduled on the first weekend in June due to many local high school graduations. The race has evolved into a fun event, with an all mixed crew format (3 women & 3 men in each canoe) with many clubs joining together to enter the various divisions.
Novice paddlers and Senior Masters 50+, Kupuna 55+ and Kupuna Nui 60+ crews paddled a 6 mile course, from Keauhou Bay to Lyman's Point and returned to Keauhou Bay. A Junior team from Kai Ehitu Canoe Club also paddled in the 6 mile event, finishing 8th overall.
The longer, 8 mile course, ran from Keauhou Bay to Casa de Emdeko and back to the finish line inside Keauhou Bay. This event included the Masters 40+ teams, as well as Open Koa, Open Glass and Open Non-traditional canoes.
Today's race saw participation by a group of Oahu paddlers from Waikiki Beach Boys and Hui Nalu Canoe Clubs, as well as members from 8 of the Moku O Hawaii clubs. Mahalo to Hui Wa'a O Waiakea for travelling from Hilo to join us in the festivities.
