Any ex-surf-ski paddlers here? Question.

Which boat and paddling technique is more difficult to master in general, and also for typical Hawaii tradewind conditions (upwind, downwind, sidewind)?

1st and 2nd generation hydroskis are by far the hardest to balance. I've also paddled a Mako Pro that was poorly built and the boat itself not balanced. That was ridiculous.

Howzit
I am still a surf skier and I own a tippy Hydroski. I love it! I would say the hardest stroke to master would be the one when the person doing the stroking is out of shape (I know from experience). If your not in great shape in your core you will find yourself swimming ALOT!
For conditions, I would say the side chop is hard to handle because you can get pushed around on the very light craft. But any advisory level winds are potentially dangerous too, no matter which side it is hitting you on (no ama requires a leash).
Your best bet is to just get out there and try some boats on a calm body of water. Be ready to learn how to get back into the boat as well because you will go over. That is what makes kayaking so difficult...the learning curve is a slow process (compared to a oneman) but the rewards of learning proper balance/technique and flying down a great Hawai'i Kai run are worth it.
Good luck!
