south pacific travel

I am going to be traveling from the U.S. to Sydney in mid-September for the International Dragonboat championships. I wanted to try to tack on some time on the front end of my trip (maybe 5-6 days or so) for travel in the south pacific (perhaps Tahiti, etc.). Possibly get in some outrigger paddling. I'm finding very limited flights from Tahiti to Sydney. I don't know when or if I'll ever have the chance to get to this part of the world again. Any suggestions/comments as to where I might visit? I'm on a somewhat firm schedule (I'd have my you-know-what's cut off from my coach if I arrive late in Sydney). I'm open to any and all suggestions. Thanks.

IA ORANA,

on a weekly basis, AIR TAHITI NUI has 2 flights out of Tahiti to Sydney in September. This airline even has 14 flights from L.A. to Tahiti and also 2 direct flights from New York Tahiti.
