Na Pali Challenge

I am planning on doing the Na Pali Challenge this week-end and I am wondering what the mileage is for the race?

around 40 miles I think

It will work out to around 36 miles, assuming you stay within a 1/4 to 1/2 mile from shore all the way around.

The start is on the north shore in Hanalei Bay.

I think the finish is on the south shore at Kekaha Boat Harbor.

This race is fun. It's not often we get to race with the Wahines. And the scenery is awesome. Actually, Keizo steered our crew last year. You coming out this year Keizo?

See you there,
Koors

kdkoors, Kikiaola (kekaha) boat harbor is located on the westside of kauai, not south. See you there, aloha.

Thanks for the heads-up. It sounds a little longer than I was expecting. I'm looking forward to paddling with the men. There should be more mixed races in long distance.

Wendelee,

I agree. Having 6 men and 6 women racing together makes this a really enjoyable event. I think adding a similar catagory to Molo' would open it up to a bunch more people.

Don't fret about the distance. Even though the race is almost as long as Molo', the half hour in, half hour out, makes it much less demanding. Plenty of time to rest and hydrate.

yeah, the molo mixed would be cool or even a mixed iron crew for the Lilio' would be great. Maybe next year?

Are you guys doing OC1 this year for this race? We used to do it with Sa'le guys. First time I did it was on a turtle OC1. How long ago is that?!

About 350 B.C.

Hey, you were right. I had no trouble doing the race. The 1/2 hour in 1/2 hour out was perfect. Left me enough time to enjoy the view and cheer on the crew! Best fun I've had in a while.
How 'bout that start?

That start was nuts -- How could anyone with any experience dealing with paddlers think they could get crews to return to the beach & restart? Like trying to stop stampeding elephants with a flashlight...

#11 Mon, 08/06/2007 - 8:26am

Our club was the reason. We missed the start fair and square. We knew the race started at 8:00 am and we were still screwing around at 10 minutes 'til trying to get our gear aboard the escort boats. Plus a last minute crew change during that last 10 minutes between boats only complicated matters worse. It left us with 7 paddlers for one canoe and 5 for another. I appreciate them attempting a restart to give us a chance. But again, we missed the start. End of story. Sorry it turned into such a fiasco.

anyone got the results?

#13 Mon, 08/06/2007 - 11:00am

I have seen them re-start the mens Lilio' race but I'm not sure how they pulled it off.

#14 Mon, 08/06/2007 - 12:41pm

i think the first men's leg was restarted FOUR times (unless the men were exaggerating); apparently they raised a flag that was a 5 minute warning and some crews thought it was the start and would just take off. the one time i saw them stop the race yesterday, they had an official boat driving back and forth in front of the men's crews. then they would just restart wherever they got everyone to stop, no going back to the beach. after all that the guys were in for an hour before the first change.

beautiful race course!!!

If slowpoke is correct, I take back what I said before.

We were SCREWED!!! I demand all canoes be disqualified and we be given first place!!!

Now if the first place team will just hand over their gold medals, trophies, and whatever other loot, so that we may begin the healing process.

And finally so as to appear humble, sincere, and appreciative: the acceptance speech...

I want to thank our escort boat crew for their words of encouragement, the wahines who shared in this special victory, and especially my crew for keeping their heads about them and persevering even when it seemed all hope was lost.

Thank you all,
Koors

I think it was actually restarted three times, making a total of four starts. The first restart, the guys just took off again. The second one they were told to wait five minutes for the late crew(s) to catch up but they only waited about 30 seconds. The guys were in for an hour because of all that. The first change was called 30 minutes after the final & official (I guess) start.

Great race after that though! :)

#17 Mon, 08/06/2007 - 2:34pm

Yep, it was restarted three times but only by some crews. It was really sad watching the guys line-up the 2nd time. Many crews held their paddles in the air ,allegedly to show that they had REALLY stopped, then would quickly take a few strokes and raise their paddles again. Tsk-tsk. Ah well, I agree that they were up against tough odds trying to restart the race. I agree also that it was a great race anyway.

#18 Mon, 08/06/2007 - 7:00pm

Yeah, this course (Na Pali) sells its self, I would not do consider doing it again soon unless they do something about the start or really penalize the guys who did jump off start(not just talk), no matter who they are in the paddle world.

#19 Mon, 08/06/2007 - 8:48pm

awesome experience!
anyone know where/when results will be posted?

#20 Mon, 08/06/2007 - 8:53pm

I heard they DQ'd the first three teams. Which is a real penalty, but I guarantee you the 4th crew and more was guilty too. I think the results are slow because they don't know when the real start time was. funny thing is the top crews could easily beat out the rest of us with out the false starts and inching past the line.

#21 Mon, 08/06/2007 - 9:00pm

Did you actually see the results? If so, where? The last start seemed fair enough, considering the whole thing was a mess, why would they DQ anyone?

#22 Tue, 08/07/2007 - 9:59am

Rumor after the race was that the top 3 crews were time-penalized (not DQed) for not changing within the 5 minute change window; they all waited too long to put their women in on one of the changes and missed the time window. Also it was observed that the top finishing crew made a change before the change-window in order to get their men in before they crossed the no-change-buoy just prior to the final stretch of the race, but i dont think anyone filed an official protest, so they were not penalized for that.

#23 Tue, 08/07/2007 - 11:22am

Just found out the results will be posted later today on this site. Everyone was busy getting boats put away etc. There were no DQ's and not sure about the time penalty. Pretty sad that a team has to cheat to win a 'fun' race. There was a protest and that fact was brought up the the officials.

Alex from Hawaiian Xtreme sports, although not sure where his coverage will be shown - sometimes they put it on the network news.

Does anyone know where to find the results for the Na Pali race?

#29 Wed, 08/08/2007 - 8:59pm

um, this says something about the usability of this site... I need to make that more clear.

They are on the front page.

#30 Wed, 08/08/2007 - 9:32pm

useability of you site is great - the article from the Kauai news only lists a few of the finishers. We're looking for the full list of results & times (all 70 participants). Anyone know where this can be found?

#31 Thu, 08/09/2007 - 6:37am

Our club Keoua entered the only koa and we were totally ignored at the awards banquet .The entry forms had this category .When we asked the race organizer why he didn't award the koa division( since they even had the medals sitting there ),he said there was some discrepancy! After some persistance he reluctantly gave us the medals. I notice that even in the results and newspaper article ,there is no mention of the koa like it never even happened. What a burn.

the results are linked from the very first titel on the home page.

#33 Thu, 08/09/2007 - 9:17am

Yeah, that was confusing for me too. Just click on the blue title (it's a link, not just a title)... :)
