Huki V1-X

I was wondering who owns the Huki VX-1 and what you guys think of it? How does it handle in Hawaii in the various conditions?
Thanks.

I have had a V1-X for a few months now. I can't compare it to other one man canoes as it is the only one I have really paddled. I have had zero problems with it. It handles great, is built solid, and the sliding foam seat is great when other people paddle it. All in all, I am quite happy with it.

I've had a V1-X for a bit over a year and have put well over 300 days of paddling on it. I'm on the west coast so can't give you input on Hawaiian conditions, but can tell you that the quality is excellent. On the roughest day it stays bone dry. Seams, hull, iakos, ama, are still perfect after all the use its gotten. Plus its nice being able to talk with the guy who actually makes it. I don't really see the point of all the Chinese OCs. They're no cheaper and half the time you wait longer to get one.

Kanu The Rock
Hey Frogdog,
I'm not in Hawaii but I paddle an X. The X is the 2nd canoe I've owned. I love the X and I have no interest in changing to another canoe. Fit is great with a move-on-the-fly track seat and foot/leg wells that you can actually "grip" the canoe with. I've found changing positions on the fly according to the hydrodynamics is effective, fun and alleviates fatigue related pain on long runs. She's fast, nimble, extremely stiff and reacts beautifully to a range of hydrodynamics. In large waters, she catches waves easily and surfs very well even with an 8 inch weedless doing its best sticking to the faces. In flats she planes nicely. She's nimble and turns on the dime. Reverse paddling? What you run into and hit is your limit. Our ocean waters are probably similar to you (big). I've had her in large portside/broadside swell and chop in the ocean where she got me huli-less through 34 Km of rough offshore paddling in July. I've had comments that she looks like she has alot of windage but I never feel any leecocking even in gusts. This is mainly since the only aspect with any "perceived" windage is the bow but you can see and feel this bow become one with waves yet ride them without sinking and cut chop and clapotis and slice it all up like warm butter. In fact when I go back and paddle my old canoe, I miss that X bow the most. Build quality is first rate. I got a heavier layup for safety since we have mainly cold water, rock and ice here. I've run her into rocks (unintentionally) with only scratches as the result. Jude is a pleasure to work with and in my opinion, these craft are not only serious state of the art racers, they are works of art.
Good luck
