who the heck is team livestrong, and what the heck is a non traditional boat?

I believe that Team Livestrong was put together to compete in the race and bring awareness for cancer research? I'm not sure how the team was able to compete, because I thought you needed to be sanctioned under a canoe club, but I guess they were allowed to compete. The non-traditional boat means that it has no boundaries on weight, length, and style. It was a Tahitian made boat that was much lighter and sleeker than a Mirage or Bradley and can go much faster on flat water. I was at the finish and was amazed that Tui Tonga and Outrigger had caught up that boat. Give it another half mile and it would have been a battle to the finish! If anyone else would like to add or correct anything I've written here, be my guest. I just hope I answered your question jc9o.

Team Livestrong is a group of local paddlers, all registered with clubs from Hawaii, co sponsored by Lance Armstrong. Their objectives include bringing awareness to Cancer and Autism.
Crews entered in the Queen Lili
uokalani races do not have to be club sanctioned because there is no process for determining international and mainland crew participation, and no rules in place to require it. Long distance crews racing in Moku O Hawaii, the big island association, races do not have to sign transfers. Mainly because on race day crews wind up short or with extras, and this allows for more participation.
uokalani, Na Wahine, and Molokai Hoe.Team New Zealand, Team Bradley, Puakea Foundation and Team Hawaii (when they were active) are a few examples of local teams not necessarily club sanctioned, but allowed to race in Queen Lili
HCRA has the "Open Class", Moku O Hawaii has the "Non Traditional" class of canoes. They must weigh 400lbs or over, and cannot be longer than 45 feet. They can be made of any material, be of any shape, and must have one 1 ama and two iakos. There can be no mechanical devices or attachments for bailing, steering, etc.
Having the non traditional class allows us here to see what other parts of Polynesia and the paddling world race in. A non traditional canoe has not yet won the wahine race, and has only won the kane race once. Lanikai did win in the Hena Hei
in 2005, but the canoe was over 45 feet long and the crew was disqualified.

Wow MikeA:
Thanks for the background on Team Livestrong and the Race Rules. I stand corrected. You mentioned the boats had to be at least 400lbs. I thought those Non-traditional boats were a lot lighter than the boats used in the Open Non-Koa class. Am I wrong?
Question: How is Team Livestrong promoting Cancer Awareness and Autism? Was there something that the team did on race day or are doing for the future? I guess I ask because jc90 was unaware who they were. Are there other events that Team Livestrong will be entering to continue it's campaign? I for one am a big supporter of Cancer research and the advancement of Autistic Study. It would be great to see this teams future endeavors.

Usually I like to lurk and read the amusing blogs here at OCPaddler, but now I feel as though I need to chime in.
This whole 'playing dumb' act that Aloha4Aina displays is almost laughable. Bitter are we? Question: why bring your issues to a public forum when you know damn well that Autism personally affects one of LiveStrong's Team members? Hmmmm I can't decide whether you're more mad that they are ex- Tui Tonga members or that they won, or both? But I guess it's rather difficult for you to be impartial when you're the wife of the President for Tui Tonga. I'm very surprised at your tactless jabs here. For someone who doesn't want to start pilikia, you sure are swimming in a lot of it.

Taimi
I'm sorry you feel that way. I never meant any ill will and your harsh words gets me to think you are the one with the problem. Also trying to bring up names and who I am is totally childish (wow, thanks for the correction, SO I AM RIGHT ABOUT YOU!) I am not taking jabs and I thought all 3 crews did great (every paddler did great!). I am not playing dumb and all I can say is you need to seek anger management because jealousy and animosity will eat you inside. Live on Team Livestrong!!!
PS. If you're going to put names, I would advise you to be careful, or better yet, put yours so we know who you are!!!
Peace Out!!!

Can't blame ya for getting defensive Gerry. And I think the term you're looking for is childish, not childless. Thought I'd help you out there ; )

OH, by the way Taimi, you spelled my name wrong. :)

We were lined up on the start line next to one of the two Livestrong canoes. All gloss black with yellow trim. The most radical canoe I've ever seen. If anyone has a photo of it, post it for everyone. There seemed to be some real resentment towards the "non traditional" canoes, but I think we will be seeing more and more of them.

Congratulations to both Team Livestrong & Tui Tonga for their outstanding performance and for representing the Big Island of Hawaii this past weekend.
I was very disappointed in the article written by West Hawaii Today quoting Masepa Tanoai that Cameron Leao's name was not mentioned as part of the winning crew (including the misspelling of another teammembers last name). I feel that it was a total disservice to his outstanding performance and his effort going into the race being identified merely as "not identified".
My opinion is humble and means no disrespect, however give credit where credit is due especially for a team member that has your back.

Hi Waa Luva:
Great comments. I would also like to add a little quote but I don't know who made it:
"The Best Teachers Teach us to Give Our Best!"
In paddling, we all excelled in the sport by learning from the paddlers before us. Then we in turn pass our knowledge on to the paddlers of tommorow.
Imua!! :)

This was the funnest and hardest race! Congratulations to Team Livestong. That was baddest fricken boat. EVER. Good job paddling for cancer awareness since it affects everyone in some form. When I got home I went on to livestrong.org. Great site for a great cause. My hats off to these guys.
