1st annual Big Boy Iron man OC 6 - Kailua to Hawaii Kai

The first annual Big Boy Iron man OC 6 challenge was held today. It was great.

Start was at 0900 am from Kailua, Oahu, beach park. Four paddlers in the boat, two holding. The strength of the fields was about 30 crews.
As usual for take offs from Kailua beach, the course runs out to Flat Island, then takes a right towards Lanikai, Waimanolo Bay, and continues 'jungle rules' all the way to Hawaii Kai at the boat house.

This makes for a race distance of about 16 miles. No changes, iron man. For those who do not know the course, the first half of the race leads along Lanikai inside the Mokuleas, into Waimanolo Bay - here you have some surf from the left, today average 2 feet, highest about three feet, a lot of little 'runners' that you can catch all the way.
It passes Makai Pier and leads to Makapu Point, the South Eastern point of Oahu, here the waters can get quite agitated, today rather easy conditions maybe 4-5/10 ?, overall not easy to paddle very effectively, but no scary wave action.

From there down to Hanauma Bay and further Portlock was not all that excitying today, some swell opportunities, not easy to get a long surf. At Portlock the water was agitated, but the wave energy did not propel the boats forward as much as you would have liked, still very much fun to paddle, I love that section close to the wall, trying to get on the surf that is being cast back from the rock.
Around Portlock into the bay, a refreshing breeze into our faces, from the front right. A few small bumps were out there. We had to correct the course to avoid hitting the reef two/three times. Nothing special down to the finish line, 'e kaupe'.

At the beach park as a nice surprise, free soda from one of the sponsors. Very welcome and thank you.
We did not have to take care of the canoes, as the wahine teams will continue from Hawaii Kai in their race tomorrow. So we made it over to the Kona Brewing Company. Free lunch buffet, very nice 'ambiente', some beer if you want, all delicious.

Great distance at this stage of the season, most teams are not at their peak yet, but 16 miles feels just right, ironman is definitely ok for this distance. Just make sure that your drinking bag functions well ... yes, no canoe race without surprises ever.

Super athmosphere and ohana after the race. Mahalo.

Race was organized by Koa Kai Canoe Club as you can read in the following posts. Thanks.

That was a brutal race, plus as the stroker for my crew with my camelbak running out of water by Makapu'u that was the worst! Amazing workout though.

Today's race was sponsored by Koa Kai Canoe Club, Kona Brewing Company, and Big Boy Records. Definitely a race for "big boys"!!

"Jungle Rules" means "no blood no foul?" No, that can't be right. True jungle rules means the loss of blood is irrelevent.

I guess the course was run in disposable boats (or perhaps Kevlar boats) and there was not possibililty of T-boning?

Sixteen miles is considered iron?

Jungle Rules means choose your own course, in this case, Yankee. It's a pretty tough sixteen miles, too. A little rougher than Long Island Sound, I imagine.

Was there any pictures taken at the finish line? Haven't seen any on y2kanu. Maybe gotta wait a little longer.

Rougher? Times, Times give me times. That's where I'll make th comparison. Is it taking lots more than two and a half hours?

I don't think sixteen miles is iron unless its through Drake's Straits with Shackleton.

speaking of tough guys.

i say it should only be an iron race if you paddle in a steel boat, or if you paddle the entire race with a clothing iron duct taped to your left ear.

how you like them apples?

cast iron canoe with cast iron paddles

sorry to BJ and Kaihe from hui nalu didn't mean to beat you guys, I trained for only two days before this race. I wonder why the medals were so small though....that was my first distance race before the liliuokalani and the coffees of hawaii maui to molokai.....

The 2nd Annual Big Boy Challenge is coming up on Sept. 6, go to koakaicanoeclub.com for all of the info and forms. Yes, this race is IRON and a challenge. Kona Brewing Co. and Big Boy Records are once again sponsoring so you know the after party will be worth the trip. The race is the day before the women's E Lau Hoe race, so men get a great training run in and leave the canoes in Hawaii Kai for the women to use on Sunday!

man, eckhart you've got to learn how to spell those Hawaiian words, it's your own backyard!

#13 Wed, 07/23/2008 - 6:16pm

Waimanolo x 2, Makapu - cute.

better and corrected: Waimanalo,

Makapu'u - Hawaiian for "Bulging Eyes";

Thanks for pointing this out, Veronica. Most of the words are English though, tough enough.

Cut me some slack, if you will, I am just a guest here.

PS: For your own progress: beginning of a sentence = capital letter, personal names = capital first letter. :)

Probably also a comma after 'Eckhart', and - do you really mean that 'Hawaiian words' is my backyard ?

Just let me know when you pick up your English grammar lessons, I will hurry to join you.

You've got her on the "m", "e", and the comma, but nothing is wrong with the "backyard" part.
Regarding your original post I'd be careful about using the words "iron man". World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) sued Southern California Outrigger Racing Association (SCORA) along with member clubs, and SCORA executives for using those words (trade mark infringement). WTC is real scum.

Jibofo - she got me on 'Waimanolo', so it's all right.

I am not sure about the grammar of her sentence, nor does it matter, I like her post.

Her 'it's your backyard' is meant to relate to Hawaii, but the main sentence does not have 'Hawaii', but 'Hawaiian words' as object.

Any teachers of English grammar out there ?

We had the 'iron man' discussion here on this message board before. Do you know the outcome of that legal case ?

#16 Fri, 07/25/2008 - 8:49pm

I believe that it is not totally finalized, but that it comes down to SCORA will not use the term "iron man". It can use the term "iron" but only if it is immediately preceded or followed by the words "outrigger race". And I believe that no damages will be awarded but both sides spent a fortune on lawyers.
Once again, WTC is real scum.

#17 Sun, 07/27/2008 - 6:39am

What makes me happy is that the Big Boy Challenge is an IRON race, meaning no changes for the crew....let the WTC fight that!

Enjoy the ride!

#18 Sat, 07/26/2008 - 9:15pm

WTC has a huge amount of money to blow, so don't be surprised if they sue someone over the use of the word "iron". Part of the agreement with SCORA limits how the word "iron" can be used.
Once again, WTC is real scum.
