Standup Paddle Board

I am thinking of getting into standup paddling, and want some input on boards. I am a decent surfer and would like to use the board mostly for surfing, but occasionally do some type of run on it. Any input would be great. Also I live on Kauai and would like to know where boards are available, or what it would cost to ship them here.

Thanks

Tropical Blends has some. If you google tropical blends you'll find their web site. Not sure on the shaper of those boards or how they perform.

You'll also find a few from C4 waterman on their site. I've ridden the C4 shapes and they are pretty fun. I range from 180 to 190 lbs and they float me OK and are pretty stable. C4 boards are shaped by Dave Parmenter and are produced through boardworks, so they are light and very durable.

I think Blane Chambers shapes boards under the label Paddle Surf Hawaii. Not sure where his boards are sold. Word is his boards work very well also.

If you go to Wet Feet in Aina Haina Shopping center they also have many different bards. I realize you live on Kauai, but if you get the chance to go over there, they ususally have a good assortment.

Or if you are good with tools at all, buy a blank from KingMac foam. Then borrow a buddies board that works good. Trace the outline, cut it out. Round out the rails and have it glassed. You'll end up with a usable board that surfs pretty well. The rocker on most modern blanks will work without much or any modification. I did that and ended up with a board that works very well for my wife. (haha) now I'm working on a bigger one for myself.

OK that's it. I'm sure there are tons of other shapers out there. Those are the few sources I've seen. I hear Maui has some great shapers too.

Charlie at Hanalei Surf Co. has opened a new shop next door called Hanalei Paddler.

He has boards by Blane Chambers, Dave Parmenter, Ed Angulo and others

Bobby at Kai Kane has boards by Dick Brewer, Terry Chung, Sean Ordenez, and others.

Lots of boards are available now on Kauai. No need go off island

Thank you all for your suggestions. I think that I will be heading up to the north shore to check them out soon at Hanalei Paddler.

i got a tropical blend 10'8" angulo board. i pretty much use it to cross train when i'm too lazy to load up the canoe, ama, and iako. it surfs pretty good too. i've also used our fire department rescue boards .... they are pretty stable for just paddling around and can surf well too (i believe the template was taken off of the munoz 12' made by surftech). i wish i could remember the site, but there was a write up not too long ago about the c4, jimmy lewis, and laird stand up boards. the jimmy lewis 11'7" was praised by the reviewer for it's stability, glide, and maneuverability in the surf.
