Canoe etiquette

I'm putting together a handbook for novices and I hoping to get some feedback on the various rules of the canoe, and what the origins were (in/out on left side, not sitting on boat, canoe facing out to sea, etc.)... the more the better... some may be cultural and some may be specific to a club, but it'll be interesting to hear what they are...

i think that in the whole competitive aspect, it's good to always be reminded of the cultural roots of the sport.

If you have to puke, lean over the left side of the canoe, otherwise we'll all be swimming in it.....and thats just disgusting.

hey aloek,
that one is new... i thought it was don't puke or piss on the windward side of the boat, but yours works for me too....you also didn't note that the side benefit of swimming in puke is you might get an upclose view of the striped or white tax collectors

Just generally treating the canoes with respect, as if they are living beings. Don't jump or step over a canoe, and never drag the canoe in or out of the water.

Dacho, if you go to my Blog, in the "Training Knowledge" box scroll down to a document called "Outrigger Manual.pdf"

It's a comprehensive guide to all things outrigging including etiquette.
A 1 meg download.

There's also a Junior Development Manual in there called "Jnr Manual.pdf"

Cheers Rambo
