its funny that you should mention that! it was brought to our attention that a well known photographer in the paddling community was evicted from the pier at the na wahine o ke kai finish line because he did not have the proper permit to take photos. photos that well hold memories for the women of this race. these "veteran" officials have put in their time and now its time to retire. we've seen a lot of misjudgement come from these old timers because they are so stuck in their ways that its hard to over come some of their judgments. i've seen a crew get DQ'd two or three times last season, which seemed to be kind of a personal attack on some of the paddlers in that particular crew. anyway...i understand that these officials work hard and is dedicated to the "orginization". but are they dedicated to what the sport means to the paddlers????

you know... i do not know rick personally, but i do know that what he has done for the paddling community and culture has always been positive and has helped many people find pertinent information for this sport. especially post photos of races that everyone loves to search for. i agree when he says that we need new leadership.

that sounds like a whole new topic...

From what I have heard the whole OHCRA board will be replaced this year. Don't get me wrong I thank the people who have been donating their time and effort year in and year out so that we all have the ability to show up on Sunday and race and not worry about permits or anything else.

However I think change is good. Bring in a fresh board and see that changes can be made. Everyone has an opinion on how OHCRA should be run. Why not run for the board? You can complain and complain but if you don't try make the change then you are just wasting your breathe.

Congrats to all the women this past weekend

Ditto what poiboy20 said. There are a lot of people who like to complain how things are done, but not enough people who are willing to volunteer their time to actually do what needs to be done. I'm always flabbergasted (yes, flabbergasted) that there are actually people willing to run the associations (and clubs), spending countless unpaid hours working their butts off just so other people can paddle/race.

I'm wondering if there was an agreement between Na Wahine & another photographer for exclusive coverage or something like that. But yeah, that doesn't answer the question -- WHERE ARE PHOTOS?

I think it is a shame that OCHRA, tossed Rick from the pier. They know that the girls/guys like seeing themselves powering through a stroke. And as for Boards I'm on the board for our club and it is thankl ess. There is a lot to getting your club ready to compete. We are working on next year already. As for the change to OCHRA. I think we may see the same bunch again next year. They crave power. Or there sense of it. Me personally I'm done next year. Then freedom.

I nominate Walter Guild and Kamoa Kalama to run HCRA.

Now there's a couple of passionate paddlers/organizers.
If Walter and Kamoa run HCRA, I'm moving to Hawai'i.

Cheers Rambo

Yeah, I knew about the Rick unjustice and I admit I don't know too much about "officials" at OHCRA nonetheless it seems weird and wrong... but....I still want to know where I can find pics. Any leads? I promise not to buy any if they were taken by the evil OHCRA empire! w

Na Wahine O Ke Kai Photo Problem Solved!!!!

I know many of you have been craving some photos and have hurt your eyes trying to look at the 6 small pictures on Honolulu Advertiser and wondering who was on the finishing crew.

I have put my niece (8) and nephew (5) on the problem. I have given them a box of “Crayola” Crayons 82 pieces of 8 ½” by 11” white paper and told them the finishing order and team colors of each crew and told them to get to work. I told them after the have finished the first 10 they will get a dry “Jello” packet or a cup of sugar. I know how to keep kids motivated

After ten minutes they came out and said “But Uncle I am not OHCRA certified to draw these.” I said “Listen Slackers I didn’t call you out of school to do nothing. I am selling these drawing for 5 bucks and the price of OC-1’s and beer is going up fast. Also I have my eye on some cool $200 sunglasses that will make me paddle faster. Do I hear Santa calling me to check in on how the drawings are going? Now get back to work.”

Ladies, call me soon for finishing photos/drawings. If you get to me soon enough, I might even be able to change your hair color for free-please see “Crayola” box for options

**“For those of you who grew up in Hawaii, you know dry Jello was the candy of choice at the playgrounds-cheap, you could steal from kitchen at home, and gave sugar rush straight to the dome. You just had to hide the colored fingers from parents and teachers the rest of the day.”

How the hell can they kick someone off the pier? Was it closed to the public?

Yo, KonaJ!
Where can I sign up for my Crayola copy of the channel crossing? I love the idea. Perhaps the groms can draw one of me winning the race!

I could find nothing either. Rebel Shots is out of business until/ever Mark gets out of Rehab. He still hasn't given people pictures from LAST year's Moloka'i.

Also agree, too bad Y2kanu couldn't take pics either over a stupid pass.

No one else covered it.

All I found were these from the net.
Not much.

I noticed jetskis with photographers jumping in the water at different locations taking pictures throughout the channel. Maybe these people are taking their time uploading the images. Call a race official to ask them who took photos and where to find them. If they want to be picky on who takes our pictures they better be ready to provide the proper way a getting in touch with the photographers that HAVE the proper permits. Jeez...such a big race and no photos. Unreal.

I just posted another video at www.outriggercanoe.blogspot.com I am going through my footage to get as many people as i can on video if that helps. The bummer is that i was steering most of the race so i couldn't take much footage of the paddlers on sunday.

I think the guys on the jet skis were taking videos only, but i could be wrong.

My name is Pake Salmon I am a photographer/videographer specializing in the ocean lifestyle and ocean sports! I went out on Sunday for the women's race to capture some beautiful pictures of the women crossing the channel for my portfolio. Some of you may remember me and a partner trying to get a canoe paddeling t.v. show on OC 16 called Kanu Tv started in 2005 . I also helped to produce and host the 2005 Molokai races. In 2006 I also went to the World Sprints in New Zealand to cover all the action on video. Many of you have shared your passion with me by allowing me to interview you and I thank you and some of you remember me when I was a keiki with my mom Angel supporting her races year in year out in the 70's & 80's. I just wanted to let everybody know it felt GREAT to see the race and TRADITON continuing on.....my mom would be proud to see how far the organization has come. I did take pictures and you can find them at www.makahaangels.com.
