moloka'i bets

Some people I know have been talking about who's going to win for like 4 hours now -- and still no one can agree.

So far in the discussion Shell Va'a is up there, Outrigger, Hawaiian, Lanikai, HI/NZ have all been mentioned.

Who do you think?

Kauai's own Kaiola CC. We had our last practice last night before the big event. I think we might go all the way....

and finish the race. sigh

'68, we are going for that 32nd slot. It's going to be a fierce battle in the mid-packer zone.

Kelly,
We're gonna take 32nd!

You think Shell Va'a will have an escort boat full of guys wearing the same jerseys again so no one really knows how many paddlers they are changing out? If they do that like they did last year, they should win again...

#8 Thu, 10/04/2007 - 9:19am

so geff um are you saying shell uses 12 guys? any proof?

#9 Thu, 10/04/2007 - 10:38am

Like I said...

Escort boat full of guys wearing same jerseys. It's hard to say but people like to talk and lots of people noticed the same thing. 12 is an arbitrary number, could be 10 could be 11.

Also, remember last year in Tahiti... Team Hawaii killed it the 1st day, 2nd day seat 5 mysteriously breaks and there is a foul substance spread all over the canvas.

If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck chances are......

#10 Thu, 10/04/2007 - 10:47am

If Shell Va'a let me ride on their escort boat, I'll make sure they use 9 paddlers.

#11 Thu, 10/04/2007 - 10:55am

to say that some random person might've broken the seat of Team Hawai'i's canoe in Tahiti and then to extrapolate from that that Tahitians are cheaters and Shell Va'a must be cheating is completely ridiculous.

#12 Thu, 10/04/2007 - 11:11am

dang it luke, i was getting there.

BTW aren't you supposed to be at work?

#13 Thu, 10/04/2007 - 11:19am

i'm at school... where i just learned the word "extrapolate,"---- it's a pretty useful word.

#14 Thu, 10/04/2007 - 11:20am

"extrapolate"- (verb) use a fact or conclusion that is valid for one situation and apply it to a larger or different one.

Don't forget to bring the funds on Tuesday Luke!!!!

#15 Thu, 10/04/2007 - 11:31am

The only thing I can extrapolate from this thread (and this comment: http://www.ocpaddler.com/node/2804#comment) is that someone here doesn't like Shell Va'a, or Tahitian paddlers in general.

...but there's also someone here who LOVES them. And I know where he lives.

#16 Thu, 10/04/2007 - 11:35am

as long as we're on the subject of new and interesting words... i think "respects" is probably a better word choice than "loves."

#17 Thu, 10/04/2007 - 11:43am

Extrapolate, love and respect this!

Top 10 in order of finish:

  1. Outrigger
  2. Lanikai
  3. Shell Va’a
  4. OPT
  5. Hawaiian
  6. NZ/HI
  7. Team Tiger
  8. Venus Va'a
  9. Tui Tonga
  10. Lanakila

Check out the attached photo, with the cameraman, babes in the second boat, guy with red shirt, others on the sail boat and attendant at my local Shell gas station that makes about 20 or 30 Shell Va’a paddlers suited up ready to go…

#18 Thu, 10/04/2007 - 12:19pm

When team hawaii came in 2nd last year in the first leg, there was wind/surf, ya? 2nd and 3rd leg, flat.

Sunday channel should be fast, and could be big, if so:

-Hawaiian
-Lanikai
-Shell
-Outrigger

Flat/Confused or headwind

-Shell
-Outrigger
-Hawaiian
-Lanikai

I don't follow other crews as much, so my bet is based on who comes in before the other, not the order of finish. Im sure there will be more then 1 Tahiti crew in the top 5.

#19 Thu, 10/04/2007 - 1:16pm

From my mental calculations, the order of finish will be:

Outrigger
Hawaiian / Lanikai
Lanikai / Hawaiian (Dang, I can't make up my mind)
Shell
Team Tiger
Nz/Hawaii

By the way, not sure who actually paddles for Tui Tonga??? If they were
stacked with the 'available' paddlers they have, I'd let my Hawaii bias get in the way and stick them ahead of Team Tiger.

Hey, what about the 'potential' pack right behind, like:

Tui Tonga
Kailua
Lanakila
Venus Vaa

There's going to be some crazy battles going on come Sunday!

#20 Thu, 10/04/2007 - 6:43pm

  1. Lanikai 16. Hawaiian 2
  2. Outrigger 17. Puna
  3. Shell 18. Hui Lanakila
  4. Hawaiian 19. Amerigo Vespucci
  5. Tiger 20. Francisco Pizzarro
  6. Tahiti
  7. Tahiti
  8. Kailua
  9. NZ(Hawaii)
  10. Tui Tonga
  11. Lanikai 2
  12. Lanakila
  13. Outrigger 2
  14. Cali. Mstrs.
  15. Mooloolaba

#21 Fri, 10/05/2007 - 4:35am

Jim, i know you are Lanikai CC biased, but OCC2 has beat Lanikai1 this season, as well as Lanikai2! i'd move OCC2 up in this list...

i'm guessing:
1 Outrigger CC
2 Shell Va'a
3 Lanikai
4 Tahiti
5 Hawaiian
6 Hi-NZ
7 Team Tiger
8 Lanakila
9 Outrigger 2
10 Tui Tonga
11 Kailua
13 Leeward Kai
13 Hui Lanakila
14 Mooloolaba

Looking at the archives of previous races, I find it puzzling how constant the performances remain from year to year.

With this in mind - barred extreme conditions:

Shell Vaa should perform about as well as last year.

To win the channel you have to perform better. Which team is likely capable of doing that ?

Shell Vaa
OCC

Lanikai I is very difficult to predict as they have used a koa boat so far but will race in a fiberglass canoe, as far as I understand. To beat Lanikai this year you have to be very good.

I like makai side's list; I can see OCC2 in front of Kailua.
Lanikai II is using a koa boat as far as I know and could make the top 20.

Another conspiracy theory ... how much does that Maitai shell boat wiegh ? And those Tahitians are sneeky lets face it no non Tahitians know them by face or name so how would be able to tell with a boat full of them dressed the same ? I know its a little far fetched but makes you wonder ? There is alot of $$$$$ to be involved in gambling down there so whos to say they wouldnt go to any extent to not only win a race for Tahiti but to cover bets ? Im a PIMP so my street sense tells me this is conspiracy but makes you wonder how important this race is to them in and out of the water . I got to tend to my flock peace!!!!!!!!!

#24 Fri, 10/05/2007 - 12:10pm

The Dark Horse ... TEAM TIGER .... these guys won Hamilton Cup & had never sat in a canoe together .. secret reports say the canoe is one big horsepower trip .. this is one of the strongest teams out of Oz in a while ... definately on the podium .....The Harv

#25 Fri, 10/05/2007 - 12:13pm

NEVER say definitely...

except to death and taxes.

team tiger may be strong, but at Hamilton they were in their waters. here the Hawaii teams are in their waters (and without the jetlag). that counts for something...

#26 Fri, 10/05/2007 - 1:28pm

Dude, it's gonna be fun. Anything can happen. It's about who can pull off the perfect race for the conditions that suits them best. Jim and makai side both seem to have educated bets.

Who is team tiger, are they sponsored by tiger canoes? From what clubs do they come from & have any of them paddled Molokai before?

#27 Fri, 10/05/2007 - 1:39pm

I see bets but no $$$$

#28 Fri, 10/05/2007 - 3:47pm

Odds: Shell 1-1 1/2
OCC 1-3
Lanikai 2-5
Tiger 3-8
Hawaiian 1-4

#29 Fri, 10/05/2007 - 4:11pm

To answer my own question:

Team Tiger consists of members from all over the country (oz) and is named after Harvie Allison’s Tiger canoes. Team members include world title winners in kayaking, and surf skis such as Greg Long, Mike Millsthom and Pete Scott.

“We are a pretty big crew so our whole aim was to lay it down into the wind. We figured if we had the lead by then [when the wind changed] we could possibly manage to hold off the rest of the field,” said Cronulla’s Greg Long on Team Tiger’s tactics.

Who's gonna win tomorrow at the pretigious Sausage Pull in Medina, WA?!
Ah, who cares, I just want to finish the race, get out, and stuff a hot dog in my face.

Anyway, strong crews go fast indeed. Though, with the anticipated conditions, and I'm assuming it hasn't changed much, the steersmen come into play big time, as well as experienced oc-1 surfers pulling them along.

Karel, Jim Foti, Kai Bartlett's knowledge sharing within Hawaiian...man, we're talking serious firepower here in the surf, probably the best anywhere in world. And, the fellas backing these crews are not too shabby in the surf themselves...just check out the roster my fellow paddlers.

1st Hawaii
2nd Hawaii
3rd Hawaii

Auf Wiedersen,
To'mas

#31 Fri, 10/05/2007 - 5:45pm

OCC-1
Shell
Hi/NZ
Lanikai
Hawaiian
Tahiti(?)
OCC-2
Livestrong
Lanakila
Leeward Kai

Put an Official on all these boats. 3 relief paddlers, 1 helper/ driver w/o jersey, 1 Coach . A 22' boat can handle. Any auxillary boat needs to be back by 50 feet and not interfere w/ their crew or the other competitors.
C'mon Boys, We all Love Tahiti, but, let's eliminate any Q's in re: fair play & up & up racing. Some of you have visited other racing venues, and have been treated well, but, maybe, once you become a true/legitimate threat, its' not so warm and fuzzy. Quite a coincidence that a seat AND spooge on THAT particular boat. If they can feel the vibe, then clean it up, so that respect is passed throughout the paddling community.
In some places... gambling is huge. Winning is everything- as it was for Marion Jones...

I'm jus say'n

Makia side... youre absolutely right .. definately is not a good word to use... I've probably jinxed the troops by now .... just getting a bit excited ! ... Tiger the man himself is pretty stoked about the whole thing .. bottom line ... it's goint to be a monster effort by whoever wins, but my sentimental fav would have to be Nappy & family .. what a buzz .. pretty hard to get your head round though... 5 sons ! ..
