Jan 10 - Spalding/Zezner & Bartlett win Maui Race #1
Hau`oli Makahiki Hou a me AALOOHAA! The 2004 Maui Canoe & Kayak Club Hurricane racing series is underway. Here’s the results and storyboard of our first race. Aaron Placourakis, owner of Sarento’s and Nick`s Fishmarket restaurants was the sponsor. What a classic; great food, great band, and Heinekens. Sarento's was an awesome venue. Mahalo nui loa Aaron and crew!!!
To the race, a total of 106 participants in both short and long courses. Welcome to the many new participants and water toys. A 6 mile short course started it off. 1st to the finish was the OC-2 co-ed team of Lou Dionese & Polly Lorge. Conditions were ideal, winds were light and variable and classic Maui sunshine. In a tight battle, Blair Thorndike went inside to find the right currents to pull away from Dave Mello in the tough paddleboard division. There were a total of 7 paddleboarders. Keeping it in the family, Karen Thorndike was 1st in the OC-1 NB F division. Congrats to everyone on the short course.
A 6.5 mile long course (not to long, just right) had 63 entries. 1st to the finish, cruising in on a Fenn SS-2 were Olympians Lauren Spalding and Erica Zezner. Elite paddler Kai Bartlett also made it look easy on his new “Pegasus” canoe. We welcome Kai to Maui. Continuing to step up in rank, “Big T” got 2nd. Longtime surfskier Wally Bouchard edged out Alan Kuiper in a wire-to-wire surfski finish.
Competition will be tight this year as training around the island has stepped up big time. We welcome back Hana paddler Bob Getzen who has recovered from a bad accident. So next race, hopefully we’ll see over a hundred racers again. I know some are on vacation, working and recovering from the dreaded flu bug. A hana hou mahalo to our tireless officials, Gail Murakami, Da Whitfords, Linda, Jen, Caitlin, and Bob. MAUI NO KA OI.
