Nice work you two ... and top conditions. Those bumps must have been huge as the Cam does not show size that well as you know.

Painteur, if i could offer a suggestion to improve the lighting with the GoPro, try and capture 3/4 water and 1/4 sky by pointing the Cam down a bit. Your exposure will improve heaps.

Dacho, the headCam worked surprizingly well, you must have a steady head, i have not had a lot of success with head mounts but you have it down pat.

Where is Dume Run exactly?

Cheers Rambo

Stunning - was that a dolphin at 6:11 top right corner of the frame?

Nice! Almost like we're right there with you. All that's missing is the data readouts for speed, heart rate, and distance... there's the next challenge for you, Rambo. Integrate your Garmin Forerunner 305 with your video camera. Now that would be sweet!

Don, have done just that, will be in a pic in pic at the top left hand corner in the next vid. Had to build a little mount and illumination to couple the GPS and one of the cams, works perfect.

Thanks for the compliments and advice (Rambo).
The Dume Run is normally from Point Dume in Malibu to the Marina in Marina del Rey. 22 miles. All in the general area of Santa Monica Bay. Winds prevail out of the west. On this one the conditions allowed only for a slightly shorter run 16-18 miles to Will Rogers Beach. Still the best run when conditions are right.
By the way that was a couple of Sea Lions coming up-stream, jumping for joy. Yep had my Garmin, but data are skewed because I forgot to turn it off in the end. However I must have been really excited. At the first piece I had a peak heart rate of 220 for a few minutes and then it tapered to my usual 168. Happens all the time.
Hmmm ?

just messing around and having fun..conditions were pretty nice.. i had jay wear the camera for the last half, since he was going much faster than me- figured to get even better footage, but the camera turned off...damn... like the time last year when i had danny ching wear it for a run down to redondo with some of the best and biggest conditions ever, and it was angled too high pointing at the sky... still working it out

rambo, the headcam is just a canon elph in a $40 bag housing from ebay, duct taped to a headlight band... little bit ghetto, but does the trick. mounted on the canoe somewhere is steadier, but it's nice to get the paddlers view.

here's what we did- 16 miles

here's the typical run-22 miles

Wow-looks like fun! 220 bpm, amazing! I thought that was only possible for teenagers. Any physiologists out there?

Yeah we had big smiles all the way around on Saturday. This run ranks right up there with any downwind runs I've done. You just need to prepare for the cold.

Another cold front is lining up for the weekend so maybe we'll have some new footage next week.

Cho's headcam gets amazingly good footage and it's not too hard to paddle with. I really like the "in-the-cockpit" perspective.

Yeah, Rambo! You go. Where's the video with the 305 data integrated? I checked your locker but could not find it. You must still be working on it... viewers anxiously awaiting! Be even cooler if you could have it superimposed on screen like those helmets the Navy pilots use. Add a little missile guidance and launching system... hey you'd be at the front of the pack in no time.

Haven't shot the footage yet Don, just a test sample. You need a dedicated Cam pointing at the GPS screen to get a clear focus. Then edit it into the main video as a little window at top or bottom of the screen. Works ok with back light on GPS, or LED illumination from the side.

What next, ..... on the fly blood lactate testing and controlled rate bicarbonate feed to boost performance.... Hahaaaa.

Painteur, the 220 BPM spikes are default when the HR transmitter goes loco, usually after full immersion in salt water (after a huli). Try putting the chest strap on upside down, seems to work better that way. If you load the Garmin data into "SportTracks" you can cleanup the spikes and the result will be more accurate results. Just set sampling to 30 or 60 second intervals.

You can also cut the data from where you forgot to turn the GPS off and restore actual route, time and average speed.

Cheers Rambo

Cho,

The boys from Imua are ready to join you guys for "Da Dume Run"

Great footage!

Let us know so we can arrange a trailer full of canoes up to Dume, I think the NAC guys would like to do as well, what do you think Gavin and Will. I know B-Mack would be in

Now I know why you boys are not doing the Winter Series.

Cho give me call.

Later,
