No Show For Makaha Contest...

I wanted to send a big mahalo to everyone who showed up to Makaha last weekend to support the canoe and stand up contest benefitting Leighton Look. This is the third year of the contest and it's good to see many people from the surf community come out and support a great person and paddler. Nevertheless, I havent seen many from the canoe paddling communtiy show up to support brother Leighton. Most of us have benefitted from the paddles and canoes that Leighton and Les Look have made. Les's generousity to most should warrant showing up for half a day and saying hi or buying a raffle ticket. All the proceeds benefit Leighton, I dont think that's was too much too as--to come to Makaha to support the Look family. I understand that not everybody that wanted to show up, was able to do so. My problem is with the people who have known Les and Leighton for a long time and receive not only paddles (out of their generosity) but friendship from them as well and didn't show up! You know who you are!

Cheers,
Andrew Penny

I just want to add, that most people have this stereo type of the "WEST SIDE!" as a rough and tough area. Which I can say is true when u run into the idiots that think "scrapping" is the way to get ahead in life.

But for all of you who haven't been to Makaha Beach.....It truly is a piece of fun in paradise. And until u actually go there and meet and get to know the good people that live and play there, you'll never even know it existed!!!!

I'm not saying to be there everyday, because the locals may get a little uneasy!! But to show support for fun events like the one Mel puts on for the Look ohana, and Uncle buff's contest would say alot. Especially if you come from the east, north or south side and or even the outer islands!!

The WESTSIDE is not always about "beefing." But you'll also find that it may be a lot more fun than you think!!!!

Andy's from freekin NZ for God's sake!!!

i have to agree that it was a wonderful contest. some broken boats out there, but even with that, most of the paddlers/contestants had a blast. thanks mel for putting on an awesome contest that many paddlers could participate in.

as for the comment made by sotrue...i don't think its the perception that people have about the westside that accounted for the number of people that participated in the event held for the Look family. many people know that the paddlers that represent the westside are well rounded and easy to get along with. i would have to say that it was the lack of advertisement done for the event itself. i honestly didn't see anything posted on this site or y2kanu to advertise the event. and i'm sure if there was, the numbers would probably have been doubled.

other than that, it was a great event held for the Look family. as mentioned by andy, they have helped many paddling families throughout the state and the country.

our family definitely looks forward to next years contest. hopefully by this time next year, we'll have our own boat to compete in instead of scrambling to borrow someone elses.

alojaz,
team holy moly!

I had a posting two weeks prior to the event. It read " Brada Mel's Canoe Surfing Championship".

Alot of us support the Look Family in ways other then the Makaha event. That we where not there, or that our names and faces are not media friendly, should not be interpreted as being MIA or non supportive. We know who we are. Leslie and Theresa know who we are. Most times we prefer the anonimity.

Most of the canoe clubs (including outer islands) have websites and contact people. Maybe if someone had emailed a flyer to the clubs, more people would have gotten info and participated. I didn't see any ads for the event either...
