First time out

I hit Budd Bay last saturday with my newly purchased Stingray and am hooked. I have stand up paddled, rowed, and kayaked but the OC1 is by far the most fun. The weather was gorgeous, 40 degrees, clear skies, no wind. I was out paddling for an hour and a half, I didn't want to stop. I plan on hitting the bay every weekend as my get-away-from-it-all-therapy.

I am an avid disc golfer also, but I can see this sport will occupy my time more.

Tikimon, welcome to OC paddling. When we hear from you next it will be , ... nice day, stormy weather, heaps of wind, 3 hour downwind paddle, paddling every day now, weekend is for golf. Hahaaaa.

The bug will bite.

Nice canoe, looks cold where you paddle?

Cheers Rambo

Tikimon,

I came to this sport from a marathon racing background .

Too much fun to be found on the ocean in an outrigger canoe.

Needless to say, the marathon boats don`t get paddled that much anymore.

A 3 hour downwinder sounds great. I would love to paddle everyday but work and daylight issues come into play. Spring will open the door to more paddle time. The temperature here isn't too bad, you just have to suit up for the elements.

Isn't it fun getting all suited up for some winter paddling in the great Northwest? The joy of thawing out the feet by the fire afterwards? I can hardly wait! Incidentally, how bout some footwear tips from some cold weather bros back east-my 5mm booties just aren't cuttin it.

Jim,

I`ve use these fantastic boots called "Chotas" , they come up to almost the knee, made out of neoprene and I can get thick socks into them . I can walk into the water far enough to launch the boat without the water going over the top of the boots. The boots are narrow enough to fit in the footwells no problem.

Mahalo, Fuzerider, sounds good!

Tikimon,

You'll have to come down to the Gorge during the summer months and find the fun in surfing the waves. Don't worry about the cold. I only started thinking that it may be cold last winter when I went out for a paddle on the Columbia and had sheets of ice coming at me along the current line. Those ice bergs might do some damage!

Jim,

I have found a pair of waterproof Seal Skin socks underneath my booties sufficient for winter paddling. I plug up the drain holes of my canoe and try to launch out from boat docks to keep water out of them. Along the line that Fuzerider provided, one of our ladies swears by her Chotas.

Tikimon, looks like it could be windy on saturday-let me know if you might be in the Seattle area. It's not exactly the Molokai channel but we get some fun days in the Sound up here.

I agree, definitely warm enough.

Jim, I won't make it this weekend but hopefully soon. The Gorge sounds good too.
