Maui to Molokai Logistics?

  • Does this race require individual chase boats?
  • How are paddlers transporting their boats back to Maui?
  • Cost?
  • Is this a sideswell or downswell race?

Not to steal this thread but according to the calendars it looks like the Lulu's State Champs race is the day before. Would it be to much to do both races the same weekend.

Whitewater, if you are talking about the MCKC Maui-Molokai race April 26, 2008, escort boats are recommended, but not required for solo paddlers. Each individual must make the determination as to whether an escort boat is necessary, taking into consideration his/her fitness, experience level, knowledge of the course, the expected conditions, etc. There are official boats on the course, but you should not count on them to rescue you. If in doubt, hire an escort boat and be safe.

Paddlers are able to make arrangements with the ferry to bring canoes back to Maui. Others bring them back on escort boats used by relay competitors. Still others leave them there for the Ka'iwi Relay the following weekend.

Conditions for this course are normally very good. Downswell surfing pretty much the whole way (if the wind is Easterly). If there is a northerly component to the wind, the surf can die out before Kaunakakai. The last several years have been excellent and we were blessed with East winds... surfing all the way.

The entry fee is still to be determined for 2008. I think it was $35 last year and included entry in the race, an event t-shirt, morning coffee and danish (provided by Starbucks), and lunch/beverages at Kaunakakai. It's by far the cheapest channel crossing in Hawai'i.

Hope this answers your questions. Additional information can be found at: http://www.mauicanoeandkayak.org/Mauimolokairace.html

Happy paddling!
