Outrigger Canoe, Surfski, Paddleboard Race
Mission Bay, San Diego, California

Recap:

Today, approximately 200 paddlers met to race in the waters of Mission Bay in San Diego, California. Our Short Course was a 4 ½ mile loop inside the bay. Our participants, which ranged in age from 5 ½ to 78 yrs. , raced a variety of human powered craft including Olympic k-1’s, single and double outrigger canoes, surfskis and paddleboards. Highlights included the father son team of Shea (5 ½ yrs old) and Steve Belford 3rd place OC-2 division and Frank Hotchkiss (78 yrs old) completing the course on a paddle board next to his son.

It was necessary to adjust our long course due to wind and surf conditions. Half of the field opted to challenge themselves in the double overhead surf, which I’ve heard made for a very fun afternoon. The rest of the participants raced their course inside the protected harbor. Competitors today included Olympic hopefuls from the local San Diego Junior Olympic training program and Newport Aquatic Center, Professional Lifeguards, U.S. National Kayak Team members, Professional Triatheletes and Outrigger and recreational paddlers from as far away as Washington D.C. and up and down the coast of California. Event Sponsors included Pick Up Stix Restaurant, Ripcurl Surfshop, Dakine, San Diego Bay Keeper, Bully’s Surf Equipment, Ocean Ohana, Paddleme Sportswear, Dri-Release Fabric, Hansen’s Surfshop and Kialoa Paddles. Thank you to all the sponsors who make it possible for all of us to celebrate our unique Ocean related lifestyles in the beautiful setting of Mission Bay, San Diego, Ca. This is one of the few paddling events where our young competitors can race side by side with their parents. Mahalo! Full results and photos will be available at:

"Double Overhead Surf"? It was considerably more than that going through the channel....unless you mean double overhead in relation to the safety boats.

One wave coming down the channel was estimated at 20-25 ft. My whole boat fit on the face of it as it almost broke on top of me....like a scene from "Perfect Storm". I thought for sure I had split my hull when I landed on the back of after going airborne a the crest.

As hairy as it was, it was definitely fun though!
