Bought an OC-1 today, woohoo!

1st time paddling...I was kind enough to amuse those on shore by fipping and not knowing how to turn it back over...and once I figured that out trying to get my 260lb butt back on from the wrong side unsuccessfully. I turned to the right to look at a seal and that was it. Hats off to the surfskiiers, that is a balancing act for sure. Really nice people down at redondo beach and thanks to Chris and Chris from ocean ohana for helping me into the "idiot phase" Cant wait for tommorrow!

Shawn, congrats on new canoe and entry into sport...
(please keep us posted with your exploits as I am a "yet to be idiot, myself and in same "weight class"--so to speak)

But being 'round this 'virtual' place for a while, I seem to recall that a spare paddle--be it a cheapie from a discount store or what ever-- secured to the boat is the best bet.

(edited)
good luck again with new boat!

Shawn Michael

is the size of the paddle face "standard" ??
My father-in-law thought the blade on the paddle could have a larger surface area and is a bit too short. He has some old olympic canoe paddles and they have a pretty large blade but maybe this is an old design.

Thanks for the replies

olympic canoe paddles as in high kneel canoes? Never tried one of those on an outrigger but I'm pretty sure that most of those blades are pretty different than most of the blades used on outriggers.

Most of the people in So Cal use blades from either Quickblade or Mudbrook.

See you at some So Cal races??

Yer gonna love OC1.

I've seen leashes on kayak paddles not canoe paddles. On kayak paddles leash attaches to center and doesn't get too much in the way because you don't change hands as you do with a canoe paddle when changing sides. So on OC1 if you're concerned about it you can (as already said) attach a spare (rather than buying a cheapy(no such thing in this industry), how about your OC6 paddle) to rear iaku or aft of the seat (leaving room for water & gear if you attach there).

However, now that you've got your backup paddle system, ensure you have a leash attaching you to your boat (cockpit to leg) so when you huli and it's windy you don't lose the boat to the rocks or find yourself offshore on a victory-at-sea day with a long sh!!tty swim ahead. You'd be surprised how quickly the wind moves that superlight paddlerless boat away from you; it then gets sharky really fast...

Shawn Michael

Thanks. I am pretty sure the paddle I got is too short. It is a 51...I am only 6ft but I have the extra long torso/wide shoulder "troll" build so I am going to try a 53 and strap the 51 to the rear iaku with an intertube. Got the leash, fanny pack PFD and the floating radio so now that my boat weights 1001lbs I am ready to go flip a few more times and then venture out.

Try a 52, bro! I'm about 5'11 220 with the "troll" build too. On oc1, 53 is for guys like 6'4" and such, generally. Also, the Lanikai model from Kialoa has a larger blade face and quickblades are customizable from 8-10" blade width. You might end up stressing out the shoulders w/ a 53. It seems most people go a little shorter w/ their oc1 paddle-there's a chart on the quickblade website. Happy paddling!

Thanks Jim, I will get the 52.
