Hiro c
I have built a vaa similar to the one I see in the videos on the utube . I have a couple of questions if you could help me. do they have the stringer from one end to the other on them? how much do they weigh? are the front and back closed in compartments?
Thanks

Mulus

Not sure what a stringer is. If it is this vertical piece found in the hull of a surfski, then there are no stringers in Tahitian Va'as.
Also I'm not sure what va'a you are talking about. V1 or V6 ?
A V1 weight from 8kg (vacuum carbon) to 14 kg (polyester). This is the hull weight, without 'ama and iatos.
A V6 weight from 120kg to 150 kg (again hull only weight). They could be made lighter but race specs are 150kg minimum, that can be reach by adding a maximum of 30kg lest in the hull. So if you build a va'a under 120kg you can't use it in a race !
V1 a V6 all have closed in compartments at the front and the back, with ventilation holes to allow air in and out when there are temperature changes.
Hope this hepls.

Holy bajesus!! 8 kg? That means the V1 hull is about 17.5 lbs. That's pretty darn light.

Mulus, how are you guys building your boats? Did you build a mold? What kind of materials are you using for construction?

Polyester they are club canoes. o ya 34 fully riged. It was a used mold from California. I had a pleasent surprize when I took the first ride on one ,it was fast. I still have to work out the ama degrees you can see it on our web page

That's right jc9_0.
8kg is as light as can be. Thsoe very light canoes are fragile and EXPENSIVE. So common mortals like be paddle boats much heavier.
I once paddled one very light vacuum carbon va'a, but i didn't like the feeling. The canoe has much less inertia and is very sensitive to wind and waves coming from the side.

Hiro C
I know what you meant I got a 7.5 onz paddle and just could not get use to it, and I think it made my sholders sore. so now I tie it to my ama and keep it for a plan B incase I break my paddle.
we had a mold for a oc 1 made. by a company but they are held up with other things so it sorta stoped. but they did make me a dugout stile single it was only a couple of pounds lighter than a strip dugout stile single but the difference is the stiff ness . it reacts quicker to any comand . and if the object is stiffer it's faster. It is high end and in the long run are they worth it? All this money and we are back to a dugout canoe. Less 12 ponds. Wich if I passed by Mcdonals a few times I would save alot moor money than for the hambergers.

take a look at our building procces at

I've already took a look at your website before...
You're doing a nice work ! Seems to me that you installed your mold in your living room... My wife wouldn't be that comprehensive.
Also your ocean going canoes are very impressive. With so many paddlers inside they must be really fast !

It's in our club house or changing room till we start again in a month then Ill be out. the big canoes are for travelling or potlaches. they make good time and can take the ocean and are made from a single log
we race yesterday and then it snowed. I was bringing up the back.my time was 1;29
