yeah, we made the call at noon once it looked like the rain backed off… but no shit, it was m.f’ng cold… any problem beyond minor would have become a nasty situation, with the winds, swell, and temp… i took the camera off after a while to concentrate on the conditions… i forgot my leash, and gambled and went for it anyways, but it made me more than a little gunshy.. don’t recommend it. also had a new ama, and the iakos are shorter than the last set, not dialed in yet- as you noticed at the end… again, don’t recommend doing that either.. but no leash was the bigger sin by far.
but this is a sick run, and can be stretched out in either direction for distance, anywhere from 8 miles to 16 miles or more… mugu-dume, leo-dume, leo-malibu, leo-temescal, and all the other dume combos….
leo-dume: 8 miles
mugu- dume: 16 miles
leo-temescal: 24 miles
dume-temescal-16 miles
dume-marina- 20 (to harbor entrance)
mugu-temescal: 32 miles
and the mother of them all:
mugu-marina: 36 miles
all would be sick conditions with stiff typical prevailing winds- beginning to end.. the differing combos can be used depending on swell direction for ease of beach entries or exits.
In the end when we had to plow through a football field of kelp almost in the dark it was more like a Leo-Dumb Run.
More exciting then the Super Bowl though.
It was cool seeing you guys up here outside the bay that afternoon (I was the guy on the bike). Alot of Zuma guards and other paddlers (mostly boards , but me on skis and me on my OC1 also)have been doing the leo-dume/zuma but especially the mugu to zuma run for years, wondering why one would stay inside the SM bay for a down wind run. We have had paddlers (board) from south bay and as far as Newport come up here to get ready for Henneseys Hawaiian downwinders and Molokai races. Would love to join you as I have the only OC1 in the neighborhood (that I know of) up here at Trancas.
leo carillo state beach, northern l.a. county… to point dume.. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1765148
normally you would end at dume, but the surf was sorta nasty at dume so we went a few miles around the other side

I like Dume but now I really like Leo. I’m looking forward to meeting him sometime soon.
