Oversize load flag ideas

I carry my outrigger on top of my Windstar and I have about 5' of overhang off the back. Right now I tie a red flag to the rudder assembly which is about 2 feet from the stern. My boat doesn't have any hardware aft of the rudder to tie onto. I saw a guy with a slipover sock w/red flag setup and was wondering if anybody knows where to get one. The sock slips over the stern and ties off on the rudder assembly. I haven't been pulled over yet, I just want to cover my bases.

I think Jim over at Paddle Power, here in Newport, has some.

Hey Tikimon,
I got mine from Jude @ Huki. It's the kind where you have mesh around the rear of the ski/canoe with a red flag . It is attached with an adjustable drawstring around the rudder.
OceanPaddleSports might also have something similar.
The Huki one was $20 and does not come off when on the FWY...

Phew, makes my $2 flouro safety vest secured with the same material as my kiato/ama (rubber) look positively low rent. Oh, wait, it is low rent. But it's cheaper than $20 and does the job just fine.

City Mill gives out free red plastic flyers in the lumber yard. Then get a free old bike inner tube from your local bike shop to wrap over to your canoe tail and one corner of the plastic flyer.

Total cost of free ninety nine!

0+0= $0

Or just get by without a flyer.

Or paint the tips of your boat red.

It's about the flapping in the breeze. That motion allows the eye to have better depth perception.

You can get some red danger tape (like yellow caution tape, but red) from a hardware store. Tape a bunch of strips together to make a flag, then use some more to (1) tie to the flag, (2) make a loop that goes around the end of the canoe, and (3) tie to the rope or strap you use to tie down to back end to the bumper (or to the rudder or other part of the canoe).

Red shop towels and electrical tape. Always cheap, many, many other uses, and the tape leaves no residue on boat.
