Feb 21 - Thibert Lussiaa & Lauren Spaulding win Pohoiki Challenge

Results of today's Kamaili Nursery Pohoiki Challenge, held in Puna District. This is the 4th event in the Steinlager/Tiger Canoes HIPA Points series. The long course began at Isaac Hale Park, Pohoiki in the Puna District, and travelled north about two miles before turning and heading south to finish at Kahena Beach with a total distance of 11.5 miles. The 7.5 mile short course also began at Isaac Hale Park, but ran straight south to its completion at Kahena Beach. The event drew paddlers from all over the Big Island, as well as from Maui, Oahu and Kauai. As in the past, the retrieval of the canoes up the face of the cliff was done by a chain of paddlers, passing the canoes, amas and surfskis hand to hand to the top of the cliff.
The H.I.P.A. race officials wish to apologize to the long course paddlers in the front of the pack, especially Kai Bartlett. Due to inexperienced official turn boat operators, the turn was set out of line of the front pack, causing Kai to miss the turn completely and others to have to make a sharp turn to go out to the turn boat. Every event is a learning experience (we have had more than our share of learning this season) and due to many issues, not the least of which, the size of this island we are frequently lacking officials and also have to use different escort boat drivers every race and season. We will always continue to strive for improvement, excellence and to have a fair playing field.
Mahalo for your attention

I just wanted to Thank everyone on the Big Island for hosting an incredible race. A group of us came over from Maui and had a great time. Next year we'll try and get more people over there. Hopefully we'll see some of the Big Island paddlers over on Maui for one of our races this year. Special thanks to Afa, and Randy for a great race and great party afterward.
Aloha,
George Dagan
