Feb 29 - Rick Nu'u, Margie Kawaiaea win Afternoon Delight
The conditions provided for a sheer afternoon of delight for most. To date that has been the best Makena race. It was a bit strange racing in the opposite direction as landmarks look a bit different from the other approach however the rides were fast, long and steady all the way to the beach. It turned out to be a wise decision to postpone the race for a day as the Wailea paddlers reported that it took them 10 minutes just to get out through the sets the day prior and that the ocean was much gnarlier on Sat.
There was one course, Makena to Ka Le Pohaku (fronting Kihei Canoe Club) and thus the novices raced the experienced paddlers. Unfortunately many paddlers were unable to race on Sunday due to other commitments and we apologize for that. You were missed.
You will notice that 3 of the top five finishers were out for their first race of the season. Welcome back to Mike Giblin, Kekoa Cramer and Kawika Williams, awesome job! They finished 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively to overall winner Rick Nu`u and 2nd place finisher Peter Kononhia. Margie Kawaiaea won her first race of the season and Zoe Norcross-Nu`u having switched from Surfski to OC-1 is doing great finishing 2nd female yesterday. Blair Thorndike continues his reign on the paddleboard and Kawika Ting as a Novice A did well in the overall standings. For the novice B’s that ventured out and caught waves “by accident”, congratulations and welcome to OC-1 racing.
