Holy Crap!

"The impact on the community will be quite serious. I'm concerned for the employees and families that are affected. This is devastating news and they will be the ones who will feel it the most. While I have great faith in the tenacity and resiliency of the people of Moloka'i, I am concerned about their economic future."

That is an understatement. I wonder what they are planning to do with a third of an island. There is no doubt they have plans!

From what I can tell by looking at the map there may be a way to get to the harbor but it looks like there's going to be no where to stay. And aside from all of the inconveienced paddlers 120 people just lost there jobs.
Carlton Helm....you out there?

I think Molokai Ranch is also run by Dr. Evil. Mr. President, freeze the assets of this band of int'l terrorists!

Re: Moloka'i Ranch Closing

Moloka'i Ranch announced that it is closing all of its facilities in Moloka'i by April 6, 2008 including the Lodge, the beach camp, the golf course, the gas station and market in Maunaloa.

If you had reservations to stay in their facilities, don't stress. You have options.

Option 1. Contact Dayna Harris, an avid OC1 paddler and OC6 steerswoman. She manages vacation rentals all over the island including Molokai Shores: Dayna Harris, Tropical Island Properties, PO Box 1979, Kaunakakai HI 96748, Toll 800 367 2984, Cell 808 658 1717, www.molokai-vacation-rental.net, fax 808 553 3783

Option 2. Pu'u O Hoku Ranch, PO Box 1889, Kaunakakai, HI 96748, hoku@aloha.net, 808.558.8109, FAX 808.558.8100 is on the east side of the island (about 40 miles away from Hale o Lono) but has a lodge that can accomodate a group of 30 people.

Option 3. Hotel Molokai has been completely renovated. The rooms are nice inside. Hotel Molokai, Kamehameha V Highway, Kaunakakai, Hawaii 96748, Mailing Address: P.O. Box 1020, Kaunakakai, HI 96748, Main: 808.553.5347 Reservations: 800.535.0085 Email: info@hotelmolokai.com

Option 4. Camping at paddler's homes. There are 4 canoe clubs in Moloka'i: Moloka'i Canoe Club, Kukui, Mana'e and Wa'akapaemua. Between us we have probably 300 member paddlers residing on island. We can ask our members to open their homes and yards for camping before race events. Many of you have previously enjoyed ohana style camping at the Helms, the Martins, the Kimballs, etc. One suggestion is an investment in an ultra-light tiny packable rainproof hammock system for example see treehuggerhammocks.com. Mine fits in my camelpack and I have used it everywhere from Papohaku to Kahoolawe. My email address is kim.markham@gmail.com and I will compile a list of paddler-friendly homes - I need a couple of weeks to work on this project but contact me well ahead of time if you need a place to stay. (P.S. to Mindy - no worry girl I will take care of you and your crew at my house.)

I strongly urge you to make a car reservation with Budget, Dollar or Island Kine Auto far ahead of your planned visit to Moloka'i. The car rental agencies need to ship extra cars to Molokai from Honolulu during peak events. If you don't make a reservation, you may not have transportation. By the way, gas costs $4.36 a gallon for regular unleaded today in Moloka'i.

Full article here.

Will this affect the condo's at Kalua Koi too?
I remember last year there was some concern that vacation rentals would be shut down. If that were to happen, there may be a lot of people wanting to take Kim Markham's generous offer to help coordinate camping on people's lawns.

How will this affect actual access to Hale o Lono? Will people even be able to drive down there?

Sounds like a huge change for Moloka‘i and a huge change for those of us that are lucky enough to go there a couple times a year for canoe races.

what a bummer for the 120 people losing their jobs and their families. One solution for them is that many of them will have to move off the island to provide for their families. Is that the solution?

This doesn't affect the rentals at Kaluakoi Villas, Paniolo Hale and Kai nani KAi but the main pool will be closed and the golf course overgrown.
