Sore shoulders

Just wondering if I'm paddling wrong (technique) or if it's normal. My shoulders have been really sore lately. Are there any remedies out there? Massage or topical? Mahalo for any feedback.

If it's the deep down inside the joint owie rotator cuff pain, then you may need a shorter, more flexible paddle paddle, or just ease up a little. Deltoid soreness-no worry, but rotator cuff soreness=very bad. Maybe ask a professional, plenty guys I know have had to switch to Kayaking for a while to let their shoulders rest.

You're absolutely right, though, my brother! I just cannot stop talkin' shop w/ all these fellow paddlers. I just tried some Political forum and it's just out of my league. I think those people all should get an oc1.

There was a guide floating around that has specific exercizes for prehabilitation/rehabilitation for paddling related injury. If I had it, I would post it.

Your best bet is always professional diagnosis from someone familiar with paddle sport.

In my own case I feel that external rotator cuff exercizes are good to keep the shoulders healthy as they work the antagonists of the heavy internal rotation see in the top hand movement pattern in paddling. The "shoulder horn" is a good tool to keep your rotators well. You dont need the gizmo to do the movement but it will keep your form good and get blood flowing in the area fast. Very Very light at first, and always after paddling. Dont fatigue your rotators (which stabilize the joint) before practice.

Good luck!

What is a "shoulder horn?" How is the exercise performed? Mahalo.

Ice does miracles. So does stretching. Massage is dreamy and worth it if you find a talented practitioner.

Good stuff Brady, that was pulled right from the "7 mintue rotator cuff solution" which was an initial marketing tool for the shoulder horn which is a gadget that assists external rotation. Keahikekai there is the answer.
