Maui Canoe & Kayak 2004 Hurricane Ocean Racing Series – race 5 – Maliko 9 miles
Right off the top we apologize for the lack of times for the oc-1/oc-2/surfskis. Something went screwy with the watch and it won’t pull up the time block – perhaps the rain had something to do with that. Aside from that the race went well…
Well… we could have used a classic Maliko day, bigger waves and rides with the wind at our back but we are thankful for the little rides that we did have. Wow – a lot of the BIG names were here and we love it. Having all the Oahu and Hawaii paddlers over makes for an exciting day – even Ropati was here cruising in Mary’s zodiac getting an up-close and personal view of the race which included expert commentary from coach Rick Nu`u.
Kai Bartlett sponsored the event complete with junk-n-po for prizes. We thank Kai for all his efforts and energy, the food, awards, the fun and drinks.
We heard the finish would make a great video – the top 4 paddlers (off islanders) making 90 degree turns trying to find the correct buoy to turn on, thanks to local paddler and top Maui finisher Peter Konohia for providing directions. Karel on his pink Fusion led the pack followed by Big Islanders Thibert and Nate and Oahu’s Kea.
Maui’s own Geoff Bogar returned to the water on his surfski. He is still injured but he couldn’t resist a Maliko run and he promised he’d “take it easy”. He finished 8th overall and first in the Surfski division.
In the paddleboard division Dave Mello won his first event of the year while after almost 2 1/5 hours Charlie Hattaway finished vowing to return to the OC-1 division. We are always in awe of the paddleboarders and thank Blair for his continued leadership.
Cherisse Kelii caught a nice ride at the mouth of the harbor to put her in front of Zoe Norcross-Nu`u and everyone who knows Cherisse knows what a strong mind she has as she pounded to keep that lead to the finish. It was exciting to watch Cherisse, Zoe and Dane finish right in a row, about a canoe length separating each of them.
Congratulations to all the paddlers and thank you for a great day!
Aloha, Ricky & Sharon
