Extreme Moffat Run - Video

With the Release of the Dume Run (OC1) video by Painteur and Cho and the Extreme Millers Run (surfski) by Rob Mousley, i felt i had to raise the bar again with a new video of the Moffat Run. Well i think i may have done it, it was awesome to do, but hey, you be the judge.

With bump chasing, trough runs, angle offs, linking and drops filmed in slo-mo and real time, this video could be used as instructional footage for downwind ocean racers wanting to learn more. It's all very clear to see the different techniques and did i have a ball paddling and editing this video. Anyway enough from me ... here it is.

Do yourself a favor and download the HQ version and have a permanent copy on your PC.

great job rambo, you've outdone yourself.. looks like it was a sick tday.. our last run would have been all time best footage we've gotten, but one of the boats fell apart (iakos sheared off on a hurricane), so we had to rescue boat and paddler... lost my camera along the way, along with the video footage.. oh well, guess we'll have to wait for another 35 knot day to do it again... can't wait.

and in case you don't hear it enough, props to you for your enthusiasm and all your vids... and your contraptions.

The answer is coming soon.

Ya Boys thanks, the runs weren't huge size wise, but the quality was superb. Came home after and just sat by the fish pond stoked for hours. (and no, it had nothing to do with the contents of the tea either)

On a big screen TV, the DVD version is awesome, like you are right there sliding down the face and you duck when the spray comes at you, hahaaa.

Over to you Painteur and Dacho

Cheers Rambo

Yeah George was the first of the radicals, eh. When everyone was still shooting surfers from tripods on land, he was in and under the ocean producing psychedelic moving images that captivated millions. I think he drank herbal tea too.

Thanks for the compliment AquaFriend and Janita, but i'm just a rank amateur.

Cheers Rambo

rambo,
this "herbal" tea you keep bringing up...how "herbal" is "herbal"?... now i'm a big believer of natural remedies myself, so i say enjoy your "herbs"

Dacho, i think my last REAL herbal fling was back in the late '60's. hahaaa . Don't worry, the closest i get to "real "weed is seaweed when i Huli with my gob open.

Cheers Rambo

Eh Rambo,

2X above ...Mahalo for sending it out. You gotta' know you are setting yourself for for 'tabloid comments' with the "herbal" remarks .... fun stirring the pot. LOL.

Aloha,
pog

Onopadde, it's all good fun, at least i get to start my own rumours. Hahaa.

Cheers Rambo

PS .. should have an interesting video of a 9 man changes race next week, The Gold Coast Cup. As well as behind the steerer Cam and fore and aft Iako Cams, in between changes i will be able to film HD footage from the support boat and include that as well. Conditions are looking challenging.

Also another new suction mount, this time without the black box. Extends to 5ft and much lighter.

When do we see the under water shot? I know theres the challenge of creating to much drag but I'd like to see a shot from the bow and stearn looking for and aft at the hull and paddles stroking through the water.

Underwater shots might capture more than just paddles and hull. Can you imagine the anxiety, if a great white flashed past in the background, especially in a changes race. hahaaa.

Rambo,
I was wondering if you have ever used any types of filters when you shoot. While I was watching this I was thinking that a polarizing filter would have helped in those bright sunny conditions. I think it could bring out more detail on the water surface.
Not to criticize but whenever I watch these I think to myself that a lot of what happens out there is lost to the limitations of a video camera. That was a good video but I know what you saw out there was way better than what the viewer sees. Obviously trying to capture something 3 dimensional in a 2 dimensional medium will never deliver the true experience. It would be great (although much more involved and expensive) to have someone shooting you from an escort boat as you video tape from your canoe.
Also, do you use a wide angle lense?
Anyway, as I said, not criticism, I know this is a work in progress and I too really enjoy your enthusiasm and hard work.

VLT, yes i have tried polarizing filters, it does help, but because of the little cameras limited exposure capabilities, the result isn't worth the hassles of adding more glass to shoot thru. The simplicity of the little cam is what makes it work so well. All the details are there in the HQ DVD version, which is 300meg, too big to upload for the web. Then there is fogging, water on the lens, salt crystals, the list goes on. Anyone who has tried to film OC1 POV video, will know how difficult it is to obtain good footage and overcome all the problems, you also need a little bit of luck.

Most cameras, including expensive ones have problems with lots of background motion (as in the ocean surface continually changing) and when filming from a support boat it's difficult to get non jerky footage, but does give a broader perspective of what is going on.

No wide angle lens on this one.

I'm playing around with High Def 720p cams at the moment, and should have the water proof issue sorted soon. The Quality is awesome and gets closer to what you describe as 3D on 2D media, especially on HD tv wide-screen.

Unfortunately i only rigged the one cam for the video above, 3 would have been a bonus but there's always next time.

Appreciate your feedback VLT, hopefully challenging Painteur and Dacho to respond will make us all lift our game, and spend some more money. haahhaa.

Cheers Rambo
